  • front pulley - should I just leave it alone?

    06 1700 40k miles.

Checking my front pulley. It's on tight, clicks at 100NM tightening. Interesting it seems to be notched at this collar washer and the notch aligns with the thread.

I'm tempted to just leave it. What do you guys think? I got red locktite and the 30mm socket fits but dont have a new washer.

If you do remove it get a new correct year lock washer first....then clean threads real good with wore brush and brakeclean......then dry and use lots of red loctite and put on at 100 foot-pounds and bend washer tab over and notch.

yeah that's probably the best thing to do. when I look closer at the notch in the pic I think someone had the right intent but decided to do it ghetto style and just whack it with a big screwdriver. Seems to be the story of this bike so far anyway.

Kind of dont want to touch it but I'll think about it while cleaning the cover.

I am just trying to keep up, 100 N/M or 100 FT/LB of torque? I had issues on my 2013 Star XVS950T and had to order pullies from Japan, It was a couple of months before they came in.

I do 100 ft pounds on the pulley. Super clean and dry threads red lock tight smack the washer over/notch (depends on year and style of washer). Shouldn't ever have an issue with it again.

I did 100 NM but will do 100 lb--ft just to be sure. Hey I'm all metric but 22 years in the US of A I am slowly assimilating.

            Cleaned that cover good anyway.

if you have to ask, you know the answer, if it is staked where it will destroy the nut upon removal is the questions, and do you have nuts?

Yea, I hate changing the recoil tube on an AR15 because of that.

That's the same pulley nut my '08 uses. You stake the thin collar part. Mine that collar cracked and allowed the nut to back off. I ordered a new nut and washer. Red Loctite and stake. Mine doesn't use a fold over lock washer.

Ok thanks guys. I'm pretty sure the nut will be damaged when I remove it also the collar washer. I'll order them.

For now everything looks tight so I'm going to put the cover back on and ride it.

Thats what I meant when I said ghetto style.

I'm cheap too but locktite is just a few bucks and lasts a long time

What I would do is take an old punch and grind a 45 degree angle. Then drive it in to un-stake the nut before attempting to remove it. You don't want that staked portion dragging across all the threads upon removal. Then when off, throw the old nut and washer away.
