  • rear tire installation

hello brothers of the Road, i have the 2005 silverado, planning on putting new rear tire soon, i have a bike jack, one question.... do you have to release the rear fender to get the wheel off?

  • #2
You don't have to if you jack it real high but it is extremely simple to remove the fender along with the saddlebag brackets as a unit. Just seven bolts total.

some people probably use them but the favorite seems to be the Michelin Commander 3. The Shinkos are cheap and have great traction but they don't last long.

You also don't have to loosen the adjusters. Loosen the axle bolt, caliper stay the pull back on the wheel and swivel the adjuser out of the way. It will save aligning the wheel when it goes back on.

Whatever you do, don't forget to put any and all spacers back in their correct places!

I made that mistake when I replaced the rear tire on my Suzuki S40, missed one of the spacers when I re-assembled the axle and ended up smashing the hub bearings. Had to take it all back apart, knock them out and replace them..

If you have a shop install the tire, make sure you remove everything from the wheel that is removable without tools. They will lose things like the 4-in long spacer that goes inside the hub, the Kush rubbers, etc.

Since this is a thread on replacing the rear wheel; I just completed for the second time since owning the bike. Reused the belt (good condition) and measured and tensioned per the recommendations found in this forum elsewhere.
However, I am getting some "whirring" type noise that appears to be revolution speed related. Thoughts?
The belt hugs the inside "right" side of the front and real sprocket and I have never had that be any different.
Open to any thoughts on this.

Align the rear wheel by measuring the distance from the center of the rear axle to the center of the swingarm pivot bolt on both sides making sure that they both measure the same. Do not try to adjust it so that the belt rides in the middle, this is irrelevant. You may have the belt too tight. A belt adjustment tool which is about 25 bucks on ebay. You apply 10 lb of pressure at the middle of the belt and it should deflect about a half inch. Make sure the belt is clean and dry with no added lubricant or anything. Just clean it with warm soapy water and let it air dry. Make sure the belt is not rubbing on the white rollers that are inside the front pulley cover. I lube those rollers with grease also. Does the sound come when you're riding the bike or when you have it operating up on a jack?

Thank you for the thorough response. Used that method for aligning. Will explore the belt adjustment tool option. Will double check the wine rollers (did not lube).
Bike makes noise when riding. I did not trust my jack to handle running the bike in the air. likely skittishness on my part.
Will keep exploring. thanks for the asset with troubleshoot.

Hopefully you don't have a primary pulley bearing or wheel bearing that is bad.
