  • Time for a new clutch

So on the advise of others on the 1st. RSC site I bought this clutch kit. I cost me $147.00 was that a decent deal? I haven't had to replace the clutch in the RS before, and probably would have lasted a couple more years but I didn't put enough oil in a year ago during winter maintenance and I noticed it was slipping a little, figured I had burned up a few disks. But anyways My question is I put a EBC spring in 3yrs ago because the stock spring was loosing it spring I learned from reading and talking to others that the stock RS springs are for crap. The new kit comes with one, should I use the new spring or can I use the EBC spring I put in 3yrs ago. Thanks.

JMO but a new stock spring will be just as good as a 3 year old EBC spring. Either way you will have issues again sooner or later. Also IMO money would have been better spent on a Barrnett spring and be done with it and just check the disc when you disassemble it. There is a real good chance that nothing is wrong with the disc but until you see and measure them you will not know. Don't forget that when installing new disc they need to be soaked in oil before installation. I like to soak them at least a few hours but better if over night.

I have a new stock spring and a new EBC spring and the EBC one is about .063” thick and the EBC one is about .066” thick. The stock one also has beveled inside edges on the “teeth” which likely allows it to slide smoothly against something...maybe the throw out bearing?

Its a money thing, I just couldn't make my self spend another $130, $150 on a barrnett spring kit, wife would have killed me. But I wish I could have.

I would take it apart and inspect the disc and if they are still good (and they probably are) I would return the disc kit if possible even if there is a restocking charge then use that money towards a barrnett spring. JMO.

I just finished replacing the frictions, steels, and put a Barnett spring kit in mine. I also purchased the kit from Yamaha. As a matter of fact, I gave the new spring from the kit to Shores.

Dave is probably correct. My bike had over 75K miles on it, and the frictions and steels look great. I ended up using the new stuff from the kit "just because" but if I had to re-use the originals, I wouldn't have been too concerned. If i'm honest, the only thing that NEEDED replacement was the spring. I am VERY happy I put the Barnett on it. I can't even begin to explain how much nicer it is (remember, I also replaced frictions and steels.) If I had it to do over, and could only do the kit or the Barnett, I'd do the Barnett in a heart beat. Also, follow his advice on the gasket cleanup.

I got my Yamaha kit on Amazon for $116 and free shipping (PRIME)

So your suggesting I probably don't need a new clutch and to return the clutch kit and get the barnett spring kit. You don't think the slipping problem I had from lack of oil burned up any of the clutch pack's? It didn't slip after I topped off the oil. My bike doesn't have very many miles on it, less then 29000 on a 2007

My bike is a 2003 with 100 000km, I replaced my clutch when it started to slip last year with the kit you have purchased but I installed the ebc spring at that time. I do not know the history of my bike so I opted to install the plates and frictions while it was apart. When I measured the ones that were removed they were well within specs. The ebc spring does slip once my oil gets dirty. Once I change the oil it’s perfect again.

I would take it apart and check the disc before sending it back. That way if by some slim chance that the disc are burnt you have the kit to replace the bad parts. When you find that there is no problem with the disc then send the kit back and get the barrnett..

Ok took it apart, clutch looks good nothing worn off, nothing looks burnt or brittle. I checked the thickness of the plates, most they run anywhere from 2.32 to 2.34 mm
0.093in. Also after looking at the new clutch compared to the old one the you can tell that the clutch has been worn some the clutch plates them selfs are not quite as ridged if that makes sense, but never the less you can still feel the ridges on the old clutch disks. But nothings missing or worn completely out.

If it helps, I still have the ones that came out of mine. Let me know if you want me to mic them and give you the numbers. You can have them for the cost of shipping. I know they will fit in a flat rate box.

I'm thinking the steel plates are fine, they still look like the new ones, it's the clutch fiber discs I'm worried about you can tell there worn a little, but they don't show signs of being burnt. Does anyone know what the Gage of the clutch discs are supposed to be , my manual dosent give me this information.

Personally, you do not need friction plates, The SR-2 will cure your slipping problem

I'm agreeing with Tim. If you didn't have a "Oh my god these things are torn up" moment when you took it apart then they are good. It would be obvious that the fiber would be either burnt or worn thru in a spot or spots all the way thru to the steel backing plate or there would be obvious warping and indications of overheating. In the case of warpage and overheating the clutch would have been sticking and not slipping. Also if any of the fiber disc were damaged from heat there would also be a hot spot indication on the steel it was next to.

you're gonna love it. As others have said before, always starting in neutral prevents clutch grabbing at startup. That is especially true after the Barnett is in.
