2007 Roadstar - poor fuel milage after monkey hands on carb.

  • 2007 Roadstar - poor fuel milage after monkey hands on carb.

    Hi all this is confusing I installed the barrons jet kit and the bike ran better but rich so I dropped the needle from the second clip from the bottom to the middle one third from the bottom and the mileage wend from 34 or so to 26 to 28.
    I thought it ma be the way I was riding it but this is over six tanks of gas, I don't think it is that.
    any ideas ?

    Need more info. What year bike and what jets did you use. Main jet and Pilot jet. When you count the grooves count them down from the flat end. The clip should be in the 4th groove down from the flat end with a plastic spacer and 1 silver washer under the clip. How many turns out is the pms screw under side/ behind the fuel bowl

    Do you have oem or aftermarket air filter and exhaust

      I will get all of this info for you this weekend when I am able to take the carb apart again.

      2007 Road star 1700 silver W/ flames
      Cobra pipes, K&N air filter clamp on not OEM replacement, Pair system removed.
      counting from the flat end (top),
      pilot jet 40
      main jet 172.5
      I set the needle 4th from flat end , plastic spacer and one washer below clip.
      Elevation about 1000 ft (Phoenix, AZ)
      PMS screw 2.5 out.
      putting it back together now I'll check back in a while.

        do what dave says , and pay attention to the sequence of the washers and spacers on that needle. measure the float level with bike running if possible using tube method. . make sure air cleaner is clean, and you didnt leave a shop rag o r have a mouse nest in there. also ,the non -iridium plus need to be changed at intervals, check them to see if they in proppa order. and specify to davej which KN air filter as their i/was a OEM replacement OR a universal clamp on carb model(s).

          Updated post above, Bike seems to run a little better, as far as the mileage we will see in the coming week.
          I hope it comes back to 32 - 35 MPG

            Did you check /clean the filter? My MPG went to crap on my last long ride and I even watched the AFR on my AFR meter drop from about 13.8 to 12.5. When the ride was over I started to look things over and looked down at the filter and it looked pretty decent. I took it off to inspect it better and found that the whole bottom from about 4 oclock all the way to about 8 oclock was dirty as hell and almost plugged . I washed it and everything went back to normal.

                You know something I didn't think about until today, some time ago around the time the mileage went down I replaced the spark plugs not wanting to wait on the mail do deliver new plugs I had some new plugs for my meanstrek that were close DPR6EA-9 instead of DPR7EA-9 I didn't think it would make such a difference (still don't).
                I ordered some DPR7EIX-9 we will see if this makes a difference next week.
                What are your thoughts?

                  Ok this is getting strange I replaced the plugs and set the float height at 5mm per instructions on this site and installed the barnetts clutch plate and springs with the 3 plate mod so no clutch slipping and still 25MPG Oil change with Mobil 1 20/50 MC oil
                  tire pressure front 38 rear 40 I rode the bike from phoenix az, to twenty nine palms ca, and the mileage 25, 32, 25 over 3 tanks.
                  shouldn't the mileage have gone up with all the parts I have winged at this thing?
                  It got 34 or 35 on the trip to Kansas any ideas I am lost.

                    does it start easy without choke, stuck enricher (choke) cable will do just that , it will run fine also. how do the plug inspections look. check to see if your PMS screw has not fallen out(if modified from stock)

                      what is a 3 plate Mod? I've never heard of that. Also did you buy the Barons jet kit new or get an adjustable needle from someone and just assume that it is a barons?

                          It was new complete kit from barons.
                          3 plate mod: Yamaha put 3 half plates in the clutch from the factory. ( the major diameter has friction material the minor diameter has a steel spacer) I replaced these with full plates and installed the barons pressure plate and springs.

                            That was a good write up in your link. I've never heard of this mod until now but it sounds like it would make the clutch grab even better than with just the SR-2. I think it is a bit overkill especially on a stock bike but some may want to do it while they are in there.

                          I put the 37.5 pilot jet back in today, I will track the mileage over the next few tanks.
                          Lets hope this works.
                          O as far as the PMS screw it is the barons longer one.

                              4-5 mm above bowl seam on rear left side of carb bike almost vertical and level ground. And did put the big spring above rubber diaphragm under top of carb back in and small enricher o-ring in float bowl did not fall out . The white plastic thingy on left side of carb is not cracked

                                I have been messing with this as time permits currently I have
                                40 pilot
                                170 main
                                still getting 25 to 28 mpg
                                today I was messing with it and noticed if i cover the air jet on the front of the carb it would go from 16ish 17ish to one to 13ish 14ish when covered.
                                maby I should change it back to 172.5 main?

                                    If you are working on a 1700 put the 172.5 back in it. Make sure the idle is set at 900-950 rpm at hot idle. You have an AFR meter set the idle afr at 13.5-13.8 by turning the PMS screw on the bottom of the carb. if your float is set correctly and the needle is set with the clip in the 4th groove of a Barons needle you should be at about a 14-14.5 afr at 60-70 mph with those settings. Where do you have the o2 sensor mounted in the exhaust? It should be withing about the first 6 inches away from the exhaust/head connection to get an accurate reading.

                                      Just a thought, and wanting to make sure that you have the spring, "between the needle c-clip, and the needle retainer clip", in place. ?

                                      With out that spring, the needle can move up a little while throttling up.
