  • Vance & hines longshots, different carb kit?

    I couldnt find the right answer so im creating this new topic... so ive bought this used 2001 roadstar 1600 and it came preowned with the vance & hines longshots exhaust system, ive been enjoying it so much this past few years, now my mechanic tells me i need a new carburetor kit and im pretty sure its not the oem one... if any of you guys here can point me in the right direction? Ive found the v&h carburetor jet kit online and i think thats the one but im really not sure... Im from Paraguay, a little country in south america, so... theres no one around here that can help me out, someone that has the actual knowledge on this...
    So i hope someone here can help me out!

    what kind of issue are you having that all of the sudden you need a carb kit? If the carb needs to be taken apart and cleaned he can do that without buying a kit. the 2 fuel bowl gaskets are O-rings that can be re-used. everything else is just cleaning it. If it has been running fine for the last few years that you have owned it then the jetting is correct so no changes need to be made there.

      I recently bought the small O ring for the carb bowl from ACE hardware store for >25 cents.
      It fit perfectly.

      Not sure how many Ace Hardware stores there are in Paraguay.

    Can it be just simple wear? Bike has 55k miles on the clock and i think the exhaust and carb jet kit were installed when the bike was almost new...

      Nope the jet kit will not just simply wear out. Things inside can get dirty and gum up from the gas and crud that gets past the filter, but that just takes a good cleaning to resolve and almost 100% of the time no parts are needed to do this. Maybe a can of carb cleaner or carb dip but nothing else. What running or performance issue do you have.

        One question I have is what kind of fuel are you burning? It's my understanding that many South American countries use fuel that is mostly alcohol......which is not recommended for our bikes due to it's corrosive properties. Her in the USA there are a lot of places where we cannot buy gas without 10% - 15% alcohol. In some cases the alcohol attacks the rubber in various systems. You may need to replace the rubber parts in your carb which technically could be called a "rebuild". I have to agree with people on this site in that your carb may need o rings, and gaskets, and a good cleaning, but not a complete rebuild including jets, needles, etc.
        If you possess some pretty basic mechanical skills and the tools required I would say you could do all that is necessary on your own.

          from Conway, SC. There is a vast amount of knowledge here. You are at the right place for solving your problem. As it was mentioned before, IMHO, I think all you need is a good carb. cleaning.
          BTW, when was the last time you changed or cleaned the air filter?

            Without knowing what his running issue is it is kind of hard to steer him in the right direction to resolve the issue. It sounds to me as if there is an issue the mechanic has no clue of what it is so he is gonna throw a carb service on it. Funny thing is he obviously hasn't a clue of what the issue is with the carb or the carb even apart to find a bad part in it or he would be looking for a specific part IE: float valve or acc pump kit.

              Yes, like davej said, why did you take the bike to the mechanic in the first place. Let's start there before ordering parts......

                Hello everyone, thank you for the welcome and for helping out!

                Ok, so from what im gathering the whole jet kit that was installed should be serviceable for the life of the part...
                So im not worried about that anymore... maybe the "carb kit" that the mechanic said i would need was just all the rings and gaskets to refresh the thing...

                Because thanks to fastjohnny ... i discovered this...

                I went to my usual gas station's website to check on the fuel specs and i see that the top one, the one thats called "97+ no alcohol", has 25% alcohol...
                Like what the effffffff!!!

                Im thinking maybe thats it, communication with some of the oldschool guys is sometimes kinda hard to get right, my country is special in that respect

                  Our bikes are designed to run on lower octane fuel. 87 with no alcohol....just sayin'

                Omg it cutted my post in half... i dont even remember everything...

                Im thinking its gonna be the rubbers and gaskets. In that case... anyone here with the vance & hines jet kit installed? Or with custom exhaust? What do u run to make up for the exhaust?
                Im gonna start looking for the v&h kit original parts to see whats up...

                  I would still like to know what running issue you have that brought the bike to a mechanic? If you brought it to a shop they should be able to source their own parts to keep away any confusion as to what parts he thinks you need. You can Google any Yamaha dealer website and look thru a parts diagram to find any carb part you need, but you need to know what you need. Going to a shop that can't source parts is kinda like going to a breakfast restaurant and the cook says you have to bring your own eggs.

                    This is interesting, Cherembosky. You're asking what parts you might need without explaining what's wrong with your bike. Davej has asked 3 times what is wrong with the way the bike is running that you think it needs a new carb. Why is it at the mechanics?

                      twowheeltherapy bike was at the shop for valve adjustments and only thing i feel kinda weird is that when cold sometimes one cilinder kinda doesnt want to explode properly but only when cold, i dont know how the bike was like when new, but ive been told that it shouldnt be like that... i called the mechanic and he told me o rings, as i expected but also needles , im assuming a complete refresh... My uncle rides too and he told me hes gonna see with another guy to check it out...

                        Just thinking out loud, but are there any markings on the heads or a way to determine if the heads on his 2001 have been changed to the 04/05 heads with svs? Just curious.

                        and to the op, have you tried the paper over exhaust while running and see if it gets sucked in?

                          Thank you sir. Maybe they swapped the engine for a newer model. Any visible differences between the 2 to easily confirm his is still a 1600
