  • accelerator pump issues

    I mentioned some time ago about a low throttle problem that I was having on my 2007 RSM. Forum members suggested checking the accelerator pump timing. I can find no information about this item, nor info on rebuilding one. There are parts kits available for rebuilding the pump, but , with no information on it, I don't know if it needs cleaning, adjusting or replacement. I don't want to screw this up, as ,I am sure,, neither do any of the members of this forum. I suspect, with the age of this bike, the stealerships have no-one experienced in 'such an antique', and would just want to replace the whole carburetor. Any SERIOUS input would be greatly appreciated.

    Boomer, if you push down on the pump plunger, does it squirt a stream of gas into the carb throat?

      If it does then it's an adjustment to *when* it starts and *how long* it continues.

      There are two screws (with lock nuts) on the right side of the carb that you make those adjustments with.

      Still with me???

    I'm not working on the bike right now. but I'll check. What parameters am I looking for?

      It should start squirting as soon as you start to twist the throttle (minus any slop in the cable) and continue squirting thru to about 1/2 - 2/3 way thru the travel to full throttle If it is not squirting right away make sure the plunger is returning all the way up against the black nylon linkage (before adjusting the screw). if it isn't and nobody has messed with the adjustment since the last time it ran good pull the plunger out clean it and make sure the plunger return spring is in there and in good shape. I have had them with bad or missing springs (from someone that pulled the plunger and didn't see the spring fall out) and I have used a spring from a ball point pen. It is a little stronger so it returns real good but may need a loop or 2 (at most) cut off to get a good full travel.

        A new carb will be over $600.00!!!!! Not necessary! Never is.

        The accelerator pump is very simple but to put in a new "kit" it will be best to remove the carb.
        Remove the float bowl. The pump is part of the float bowl.
        Before you put in the new parts use a can of carb clean and squirt into the pump hole at the bottom
        and make sure the passage into the float bowl to pump resvour is clear.
        Also squirt some carb clean through the nozzle in the intake and make sure it is clear. PROTECT YOUR EYES!!!

        When you put the float bowl back on make sure the small O ring has not fallen out.
        IF you lose it you can get another one from ACE hardware store. Not kidding.

          Get a service manual. I have a Clymer book. Bought it off E-Bay for about $40.00 years ago.
          There's lots of detailed info about the accelerator pump in the carb section.I used it to dial-in the pump on my '00 R/S HotRod.
          I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !
