Does Anyone run a 195 Main jet? Thoughts on my set up?

  • Does Anyone run a 195 Main jet? Thoughts on my set up?

    I've been scouring all the carb threads and I have yet to come across anyone running a 195 main jet. In fact, most posts aren't anywhere close.

    Why am I running one? Because it came in the precise instructions with my Thunder MFG. tear-drop style Air Kit years ago. They were a pretty reputable tuning shop among other things and I didn't know enough about jetting at the time to think otherwise.

    Their Instructions: 190 Main jet for stock pipes, 195 for aftermarket. Baron's needle on 3rd clip. Pilot jet unchanged.

    My Bike: 2006 Road Star, AIS removed, Dyna 3000, 3" Big Straights Exhaust w/monster baffles, Thunder MFG Air Kit. 195Main, Needle 3rd clip. Most of my time is spent at 2600' or higher. I have a ported manifold, but am debating on installing it (see other thread).

    As I reassemble my carb after years of hibernation (I had neck surgery) do any of you have some recommendations? Or just go with the printed instructions? Also, reading the ported manifold thread, it says you may need to reduce your main jet if you port - is that correct?

    most members around here use a Barons jet kit that uses Mikuni jets. Your kit don't use Mikuni jets and the sizing is different. Some jet manufacturers size in fuel flow and some in hole diameter. Your 195 along with their needle likely flow about the same amount of fuel as a Barons needle and Mikuni 172.5 main jet. Also the needle taper and diameter from different manufacturers makes a difference in fuel flow.
    No reason to reduce the main with a ported intake manifold. you will also get the best jetting advice if you get a Barons kit and use Mikuni jets. You will be lucky to find anyone that knows much about the kit you have. If you are gonna use it I would use their instructions and fine tune from there.

      Dyna jet 195 would be a Mikuni 183ish size. If it's a keihn jet then it would be a smaller Mikuni...about 175 or so.

        I always thought the number was related to a size. Thanks for the info. I'll have to get a picture of my needle to see if I'm actually running a baron's as I thought or if I have the dyna jet.

          Honestly if not sure and it's not running right just spend the $50 and get the Barons kit...we can get you dialed in precisely based on your bike setup

              Here's a pic of the needle for reference.

              I got it all back together and while I need to do some fine tuning, she's pulling strong.

                how many groove does that needle have?? what did you find and change

                  I believe it had 6 grooves.

                  I found a lot of varnish and this guy was pretty plugged up.

                  BEFORE the cleaning, I changed the idle and the accelerator pump. So now I gotta go back and undo the accelerator pump for sure.

                    I bought a six-sigma kit that came with a 195 jet, ran too rich on my 1600. I ordered a Mikuni 167.5 and runs just as good but doesn't completely stank up the garage when I start it.

                      I would makes the changes that DaveJ has suggested. His recommendations made my Roadstar run very good!
