  • '05 1700 RS - Dynojet vs Baron/Mikuni Kit

    Not trolling, but I have a real question. On a recommendation, I have a Dynojet kit I bought a while back that I forgot about. Going pumpless and remembered that i had it. Looked on the forums for info of correct Stage 1 jets and needles and such and was noticing all comments about Mikuni.

    Should I ditch this kit before opening it and go for the Barons kit and additional Mikuni 172.5 / 40? My only mod so far is the V&H Big Shots; still stock filter setup. I'm going pumpless mainly because mine died and is too $$ for a new one. So my other question is,does any of this affect my mods that i need to make to go pumpless?

    Great with Jeeps and other car motors - new to 2 wheels with engines. Seems like a whole new world. Any help, insight, feedback, etc will be much appreciated.

    I would wait to install the kit until you decide to change the intake/filter to an aftermarket high flow filter. with just your exhaust mod you really shouldn't need to do anything to the jetting

      If you're going pumpless you're replacing one of the components (grizzly valve); that means you're opening the carb.
      Why dont you buy a K&N RC1980 air filter which is not expensive, then install the Baron's kit - you will be doing everything at the same time instead of several tries.

      I also have an 05 but I have the V&H longhosts instead.

        Thanks for the input and suggestions. Ordering the Baron/Mikuni Kit. Also got the K&N 1980. May be a dumb question, but do I remove all of the carb's jets and replace all of the jets with the ones in the kit?

          No, and your going to need a #40 pilot jet not in the kit.

        you will be changing the main jet and pilot jet only. In fact you will have to order the #40 Mikuni pilot jet separately, it does not come in the kit. Barons reuses the stock #35 pilot but there is an improved performance difference when using the #40 pilot jet. Also when using the #40 pilot jet only turn the PMS screw to 2 1/4 - 2 1/2 turns out an not what the Barons instruction calls for. The instructions are meant for the #35 pilot jet.

            OK, maybe I'm thick headed but I am almost embarrassed to ask this. Why don't I replace all of the carb's jets with the kit? I understand getting the additional #40 and not to use the #35. I must be missing something because if all I need is the Mikuni #40 pilot and the 172.5 main jet what am I using out of the kit? Is it only for the main jet? Is that in the kit? I thought that was also separate. Told you I'm thick headed. Lunk Alert!

              You're buying the Kit to get an adjustable Needle.
              For some ridiculously unknown reason, you CanNot buy just a 6 slot adjustable needle for a BSR40 Makuni carburetor.
              We've been trying for at least 10yrs that I know of.

              EVERYTHING else you can buy separately.

              You are not changing "All" the jets in the carb because there are a few "air jets" that only need to be clean for air to pass thru. You will be changing all (both) fuel jets. As Spydr said above you need the kit for the Main jets and adjustable needle that can't be purchased without buying a kit.

            There is nothing wrong with the DJ needle. If I were you, I would run the DJ needle with the Mikuni jets. That’s what is in mine. There is a gnat’s ass hair difference in the needles. You won’t notice.

              I think the deference is mostly in the length IIRC the DJ clip in the 4th groove is about a 1/2 groove shy of the 4th groove on the Barons. Just a slight difference in taper. I'll see if I can find my needle comparison chart and post it. You are correct in that with a dynojet needle you can use the same jetting configuration as a Barons needle and everything will be fine and the bike will run great.

                So are you going to use the DJ needle and just buy the necessary jets? Or are you going to buy the Barons kit?

                  Bought the whole Barons kit for $55 off Amazon as well as the #40 from JetsRUs.

                How's it running? Thinking of swapping mine out for the "known" Barons for help around here with tuning.

                  Thanks everyone for the input. So what started as a dead fuel pump turned into a project that sent me down a rabbit hole of upgrades, mods and bypasses. Fuel pump gone and went pumpless, jets changed to barons and upgraded other jets as recommended on here, carb completely cleaned, gas cap vented, AIS gone, charcoal canister gone, relocated the crankcase filter under the tank, stock air gone replaced with HF K&N filter, and ripped out any emission hoses I could find and capped the openings. Final result: no more backfires at all, much smoother engine idle, faster accelleration, and butt dino says I increased my HP. Best yet, opened up the engine to a lot of new air by cleaning the garbage out of the way and dropped 11 Lbs off the bike. None of this would have been possible without the help on the RC Forum. Thank you everyone that helped.
