    I hate to start a thread about things that imsl sure have already been covered, but im lost. I just bought an '06 r* 1700 midnight. Guy I got it from put v&h dual short pipes with baffles and an aftermarket intake (cheap chinese crap one off ebay). The bike stumbles on acceleration and at highway speeds but cruises below 50 decent. Back firing on deceleration, and even revving it in neutral it stumbles. I'm sure it needs jets, but I dont know what sizes. I also dont know the benefits of getting rid of the AIS. Thank you guys in advance, and I apologize for bringing up old topics.

      Buy barons jet kit...adjustable needle and jets....

      main jet 172.5
      pilot jet 40
      put clip on 4th groove of adjustable end (keep orientation of stock washers/spacers/clip the same)
      turn PMS in to lightly seated and then turn out 2.5 turns and you should be good.

      delete AIS (will need barons block off plate kit).

        Representing Scorpion Gulch, Arizona. With aftermarket exhaust, the AIS delete will relieve some of your backfiring. You also lose a lot of weight and ugly plumbing. My bike is an '06 1700 with short V&H baffled pipes and a K&N filter and it is jetted the same as described above, and it runs pretty good. I also used the Baron's AIS block off kit which can be found on Ebay.

            Thank you all! I scoured the forums quite a bit but was getting desperate because Sturgis starts in 2 days and I have company coming to ride this year. Hoping to make this bike better and last for many thousands of miles!

                Good starting point for sure.
                Be sure to check for vacuum leaks on the intake manifold, and these are nice, too :
