  • Need to double check needle setup before reinstall!

Ok before I put this all back together, I want to double check something on the needle.

    1) clip on the 4th groove
    2) spacer BELOW clip
    3) 1 washer ON TOP of clip (towards spring?)
    4) NO WASHERS UNDERNEATH THE SPACER?

I pulled those E3 plugs and they are wet and jet black, so I'm obviously super rich somewhere. I double checked the jetting and it is correct, 172.5 Main and a #40 pilot. PMS turned 2.5 turns out from seated.

However when I checked my needle It had the clip on the 4th groove, Spacer under the clip, then three washers under the spacer and none on top of the clip and the spring was misshapen. So I am assuming this where my super rich condition was coming from ?

Trying to get her back together today to go and ride tomorrow and hoping this cures the backfire and super rich condition I have been having. Also installing dynatech coils and 10mm wires and NGK iridium IX plugs. Checked the manifold and its in perfect condition (PHEW!) no leaks anywhere.

Try one washer under the spacer and one on top of clip, that is the norm, but remember every bike is different,,, and a #40 primary may be to big, #35 seems the norm for 1600, or is yours a 1700 ??

I thought it was supposed to be set at slot 3 from the blunt end, with one washer on top of the clip, spacer below and one washer below the spacer. Is that setup outdated?

Does your available gas and elevation change things? If I remember right, you’re up higher than most of us.

The clip in the 4th from the top(blunt end).
The fat plastic spacer under the clip.
A single washer on top of the clip for the spring to ride on.

Now....... without the additional washer(shim) under the clip with the fat plastic spacer, you’ll be at 3.5. With a washer(shim) under the clip as well as the fat spacer, you’re at 4.0.

If some reta...well intentioned individual put 3 shims under the clip as well as the fat spacer, the elevation was 5.0 which is rich.

                  Try the 3.5 or 4.0.

The jetting davej gave you is good for your 1700.

35 pilot is stock, 37.5 works best for a 1600 w/intake and exhaust mods and 40 works best for a 1700 w/intake and exhaust mods. They are not too big. I personally did a lot of real life testing and dyno's to find that combination for both bikes.

i always wondered if this played a role. Here at 5280ft above sea level our fuel availability is indeed slightly different. Our premium is 91 and basic is 85. I do believe you low landers have 87(our mid grade) and 93?

You’re running a CV carb. It compensates for elevation because it’s all about pressure change between the air outside the carb, and the pressure inside the carb caused by the Venturi created in the carb throat.
We’ve had a variety of riders run all over elevations far higher then what your at, just fine. It’s been discussed at great length by members here for years. They generally experience a loss of power, but seem to get better mileage in some instances.

I watched a documentary about a British bike builder who did a retro salt flats build for a customer. They brought it to the Flats to try and break a class record. They did a really good run, and then decided they needed to reduce the jetting, because of the same thinking people here sometimes get confused with. ie, less(thinner)air at 4300 ft, equals a need for less fuel. They immediately dropped their top speed by something like 5 to 7%. They went back to the previous richer jetting, and voila!!! the top speed jumped right back up.

If you like that “grab a handful of throttle and go” feel, then stepping up on the jetting and slightly raising the needle elevation when opening up the intake and exhaust, is highly recommended.

If you are running rich in a problematic way, then the first thing I’d do is double check the float height, and if it’s the stock needle and seat, I’d replace it(it comes as a matched set).

Luckily y'all got back to me before I reinstalled the tank. I went ahead and added the washer between the clip and the spacer and reinstalled the needle. Clip on the fourth groove and the jetting Dave gave me (Thanks a lot dude!). Gonna wait till the neighbors are a bit more awake before i try and fire her up but I am hoping that the new mix of PROPER jetting and needle setup along with Dynatech coils and 10mm plug wires, new NGK iridium IX plugs and a cleaned and refreshed air filter I should be making some nice power with a clean burn and no rich condition. With any luck this also solves the backfire I was having. If not the pipes come off for SVS cure.

Success! Bike fired right up, no backfire and purrrrrrrrrrrs like a kitten. Can tell I was way rich for a while because it was pushing a lot of shit out the pipes as she warmed up. But then she smoothed out and exhaust hit the right temp to burn off all that extra carbon and she is ready to rock!

Big thanks to everyone who dealt with my second guessing ass over the last week or so hahaha! Updating the jetting in my profile for others right now!

Nope, I cannot see it either. I can zoom in but it’s to blurry to see or read. Also if we are voicing complaints here, the posted videos only show me the left side. I have to open separately or I have no button to close the videos. I’m using an iPad by the way.

I cannot make that pic any larger or I would have. If you want to help, go take your carb apart and take a nice large format pic. Post it here for all to see.
