  • New member, new bike, few questions

First off hello everyone! hope to learn a lot here. I bought my 04 road star xv1700 about 3 weeks ago and have been tinkering with it ever since. It has Vance and Hines longshot with spiral baffles, K&N filter with stock air box that P.O hacked off the bottom portion. Carb has been cleaned and jetted to 172.5 main, 40 pilot, needle set at clip 4 with one metal washer and one plastic spacer, grizzley fuel needle and seat with no fuel pump, and PMS to 2.5 turns out. Bike doesnt have the AIS either. Now the issue is my bike will not start with the enricher pulled out, at all. When cold the bike will start, albeit very low idle, without the enricher pulled but if I try to pull the enricher out even slightly it kills the motor. Ive been told that means im running too rich but as far as everyone's recommendations on here my jetting is where it needs to be. Any ideas on this situation?

The other question might correlate with my problem up above, while im accelerating I get a beautiful rhythmic roar through the exhaust, but when I pull the clutch in to shift, or engine brake on a decal, the note changes from a roar to a spit or fluttering sound with very faint random popping. I'm curious as to if this is normal with these engines and free flowing exhaust because ive never ridden or heard a bike make this noise before. When I placed a piece of paper at the end of the exhaust to check the idle the front cylinder was perfect but the rear has an extra pop and sometimes sucked the paper towards the pipe.

Sounds like you have sticky valve syndrome. Someone will post the remedy.

Would that be causing the problem with the choke or is that for the decal noise?

        Seems rich to me.
My bike just doesn't like the recommended jetting. Mine runs best with a leaner main and a lower needle. But I'm in SoFla and we breathe water down here. Perhaps that's why? Don't know.
        It gets about 43mpg tho.

What jet kit did you buy? Barons is the go to kit for jetting.

from California. Yep, paper getting sucked into the pipe means sticky valve syndrome [SVS]. First approach is to run a high dose of Seafoam in the tank. Try a "shock treatment" and pour half the can in a full tank of gas an go ride the snot out of it, doing a bunch of full throttle standing starts, hitting the rev limiter before shifting. Get a mix of back roads and highway riding. Run through the tank and repeat with the second half of the can of Seafoam and another tank of gas.

If that doesn't do the trick, pull the exhaust from the motor and spray a metric shit-ton of Seafoam *Deep Creep* inside the exhaust port, covering the exhaust valves, and let it soak over night; then go ride the shit out of it again with the Seafoam in the tank too.

A rich carb tune will cause SVS and if you cant start with the enricher pulled out, you are running too rich. Try switching to a 37.5 pilot and let us know if she still has starting issues. You may need to switch to a 170 main as well, but try starting with the pilot.

FYI once you get the SVS resolved, you'll need to change your oil from all the crap the Seafoam will free up. It wouldn't hurt to add a couple ounces of Seafoam to the oil too and ride it before you do the oil change. Maybe during the second tank of Seafoam.

I didnt buy a jet kit, it was already installed by the PO. The PO passed away so I didnt get much info on the bike. It had the barons PMS installed, the one with the thumb screw, so I believe it was a barons kit but it had some weird 185 main jet. I switched it out with a mikuni 172.5. Ill def do the sea foam trick. I also changed the plugs last week as the previous plugs were completely black. I just checked the new plugs tonight after riding it today for a few hours and they show a lean condition. I checked for intake leaks already and dont seem to have any. The bike runs like a gorilla on steriods through all gears and never misses a beat which is why im scratching my head at it.

The PMS thumb screw is sold separate from their jet kit. No worries though, as long as you have the Baron needle with the 6 grooves, you can buy individual jets off eBay. If you don't have the complete Baron kit, you can order a 37.5 pilot jet N224.103/37.5 and while you're at it, order a 170 main jet N100.604-170. Even if the bike is running well, I'd still swap out the pilot if you can't start the bike with the enricher pulled out and just hang on to the 170 in case the SVS returns.

I was messing with the PMS today with the idle real low, somewhere around 600rpm im assuming. Beginning at 2.5 turns out, It would start to stumble with 1 full turn in (lean). Now, going the other direction the idle never stumbled and I even found my fastest and smoothest idle at 4 turns out. Shouldn't the bike stumble as well turning it out too far and is this more evidence that i need a smaller pilot jet?

Set the idle at 850-900 as intended. Lower like 600 that you described will give you dangerously low oil pressure in the upper end.

4 turns out is too much; your idle is too low. *First* set the idle to 900 RPMs with the bike HOT. Then you adjust the PMS. Not only does low idle effect tuning, but more importantly you'll starve the top end of oil.

I read somewhere to set the idle to where the bike will barely stay running so the change in RPM is more noticeable. Guess I went too extreme with that info lol

No no no... Not unless you want to prematurely kill your motor. These bikes will easily go well beyond 100k miles without ever needing a rebuild as long as you keep them properly lubricated.

from Iowa. I have a 2005 that was having SVS problems when I bought it used with 1100 miles on it. Changed to Barons jet kit with 167.5 main, clip on 3rd groove with 1 plastic and 1 steel under it (essentially 3 1/2). Stock pilot jet. Barons thumb screw PMS set at about 2 1/2 turns out. K&N 1980 air filter. With the settings I have it runs like a striped ass ape. I now have 78,500 miles on it and have had no issues whatsoever with it.
To me it sounds like you DO have SVS and are still a bit rich. If it were mine I would change the main and the pilot, and I would use either Seafoam or Yamaha Ring Free to get rid of the built up carbon.

Thanks for the greetings fellas! I got my 37.5 pilot jet in the mail today and when I went to install it I noticed the starter jet orifice was about as big as the main jet. Is this normal? it has no markings on the jet to indicate size or even brand. I'm unaware of the purpose for this jet.
