  • Pumpless 101

So my fuel pump took a crap . I was in the process of ordering one and decided to see what going pumpless entailed as a new oem pump was 70$ according to these forums you needed a different line and a new needle from a grizzly and seat and adjust the bowl .
I'm also on another forum just low budget related and a guy says " I just ran my existing hose straight to the carb and it has ran fine for years now ." He had an 01 R* . I said what the hell I'll try it . Takes maybe 15 mins .
So I just ran a hose from the petcock to carb and it fired right up . No backfire no nothing . I rode it about 20 miles did just fine ... Am I asking for trouble or is everything fine? I have the 07' R* 1700 . Thanks for any info and if this has been discussed before I couldn't find it in the archives . Plenty of pumpless literature just nothing on gravity feed by just moving the hose from the pump straight to the carb with no adjustment or anything.

Run it hard, and see if it starves for fuel.
If you can accelerate at WFO without starving your engine, Then you have your answer.
Some do fine running straight from tank to carb, some need the larger inlet. Some have to vent their cap, some do fine without.

It's better if you find out Now what you can get away with.

Let us know the result of your tests. Others can benefit from it later.

    Good Luck, Jed.

I went pumpless, did the Grizz and vented the cap. But I know of plenty others on here who did what you did with the same results. Why spend the money if you don't have to? It's not a lot of money for the Grizzly valve and venting the cap is free, but if it works as is, you are golden.

I've got a FI Roadie so pumpless isn't an option.

As others have said, I think the reason for the Grizzly valve is it's larger and flows more fuel. If you're riding it hard is where you'd likely notice it. I'd run the tank low first as a full tank will have more pressure forcing the fuel to the carb vs a tank that's nearing reserve. My guess would be on a low tank you could ride in a "limp mode" to a gas station in worse case scenario.

I only put an inline filter in, and ran the line OVER the intake. I do run on reserve, but other than that... No grizzly, no venting, no nuthin'! And, I did it to all 3 of my R*s with the same result!

Made a bracket from a piece of angle iron and relocated it.
Bolted to the upper engine mount or to the rear tank bolt are the two most convenient places.

I made a little sheet metal bracket for my choke when I did my 2000 Roadstar. Painted it flat black. Worked like a champ.

I ran a different carburetor than stock so I didn’t do the Grizzley valve. I did notice I had to switch to reserve sooner than when I had a pump. Maybe the bike might want to starve a bit after a long right hand sweeper at high speeds, maybe not. If it does, you’ll most likely know why. I also vented my cap as a precaution.

I think it all depends on how you ride (as has been already mentioned). If you mostly putz around and ride pretty conservatively, probably get away with just running the line and be done with it. If you blast down the highway at 85+mph or like to rip around at higher throttle, then you’ll want to do all the recommended mods so it doesn’t intermittently starve for fuel.

I like to rip . I did take it for an hour ride yesterday did good until it got down to a quarter tank then I'd died I pushed it to a gas station and refueled ran great . I'm assuming as someone stated it didn't have enough fuel in the tank to push it over to the carb is that common? Oh and here are my plugs I pulled them today ...it looks rich to me . Idk . I've never had then a golden brown .

Pretty sure the experts will say those look good.
They will ring in soon, I'm sure.

My bike prefers to be jetted a bit on the lean side. So my plugs would be lighter in color than yours.
But that's not the preference here. The guys here would say that what you have is ideal.

Spydr , I appreciate your knowledge man . Earlier you mentioned you vented your gas cap ....is there a thread on here on how to do that or did you just buy one ? I'd actually prefer mine to be a bit leaner myself but I've had the carb off so much this year I'm not even gooling with it again till winter .

Jed, inside the cap are two two plastic inserts. Below each of those is a rubber plug. You can remove one or both of those plugs, and replace the plastic inserts. This allows the tank to breathe.
I only removed one of those plugs and the tank breathes just fine.

Be Very careful when you disassemble the cap... there are springs in there that can go "Sproing!!!" .

Maybe take pictures as you disassemble it (on a towel), to be sure you put it back together correctly.

P.M. me if you need more details.

Thanks a million man !!! I dont mean to cross thread here ( no pun intended) but does the vent on the head of the tank ( under the speedo bezel ) not vent it enough?

The vent that's on the tank is enough for venting the tank. You need to make sure the vent line is flowing air good, and myself, would remove the double acting check valve, "roll-over valve". I didn't like venting the fuel cap because my bike leaked fuel when the tank was full of fuel.
Your spark plugs look great to me, and I don't think your bike is running rich. Myself, I'd leave the carb settings alone, unless you install the Grizzly float valve. Then just set the float level.
The petcock valve has two sock filters, one on the on inlet, and one on the reserve inlet. Those filters are enough to filter the fuel, as Father Pobasturd stated. If they ever get dirty, then you will have to blow them backwards until you can pull the Petcock to clean them out.
                      Duke.
