  • Idles lower when shifted to N

    I noticed that when I come to a stop and pull the clutch in on 1st gear my bike will idle down to a certain rpm and settle there, but as soon as I shift to Neutral it will idle down a little more and stay.

    i have read that certain carb tuning issues will prevent it from wanting to idle down, float level, etc. Something like that is certainly possible. But why would it kick down because I shift to N? It's enough to be easily noticeable, but not at all a problem to how it runs.

    I'm doing carb work soon anyway to replace a seeping gasket and rejet for a BAK, so if there's anything in particular I could investigate while I'm in there...

    I've noticed this on mine too. I was tuning the carb just yesterday, after putting my motor back together, and I dialed out my accelerator pump. "Hanging Idle" can be a sign of running too lean. In my case I'm certain it wasn't too lean, so I think what was happening is the accle pump was set too sensitive, coming on too soon, and the motor was burning off that extra squirt of fuel from any time I barely touched the throttle. I managed to get it dialed in yesterday, and now it doesn't hang as much. Confirm it's not too lean and then check the accelerator pump timing and duration. I know that doesn't specifically have to do with neutral, but it sure seems better now. Also be sure to set your idle when the bike is *completely* hot, i.e. after a minimum of 20 mins riding, especially if it's cold outside.

      I did have it a bit lean and enriched it last week. Plugs are looking more the right color but I haven't ruled it out yet. I had been wondering if the float level might be too high and so it's just siphoning a little easier, but I didn't think about the accelerator pump being to sensitive. Thanks for the tip.

      I'll be checking all that out, but I still can't explain why neutral triggers it. Was wondering if maybe the ECU changes timing slightly in Neutral? *shrug*

        I've been wondering the same thing. Hell, i didn't even know the R* had self canceling turn signals until recently, so who knows. Hopefully someone who does will chime in.

          Glad to know I'm not the only one puzzled.

          I suppose timing change could be checked with a noid light and a sufficiently curious/bored person. I don't own any noid lights, though.

            A noid light is for checking injector circuit pulse. How would that help in checking timing change?

              Damn Dave. I was hoping you'd be the one to know the answer. After all you were the one who told me about the auto canceling turn signal. But I still haven't been able to confirm it since I keep pushing the damn button without even thinking about it. ...Old habits.

              Yep, my mistake. Not sure what I was thinking, haha. Using a timing light or whatever just to check this seems... inconvenient.

              Besides, now that I think about it, it makes no sense to change timing advance in N.

              I rode a bit last night and it didn't do it every time, either. I tried taking my hand off the throttle before I was at idle and stopped, just to see if I was bumping it unconsciously, and it behaved the same.

              I still have some checking and possible tweaking to do. But I wonder what else maybe changes when shifting into N. All I can do is speculate wildly and ignorantly, haha.

                Do you still have your AIS installed? Just wondering if that could have something to do with it. IDK, just pulling stuff out of my arse.

                  Nah, gone for years. I did recently notice I had been running most of last year with that port on the manifold open.

                    Have you adjusted your clutch cable? About the only thing I can think of is if your clutch is grabbing a little bit putting pressure on the drive line the rpm would be lower. When shifting to "N" all pressure on the drive line is now free and RPM would raise.

                      Actually its the other way around. Shift into neutral and the RMPs drop.
