  • K&N or Barons?

I am able to get a Barons air cleaner for $75. It is used and the filter needs a cleaning. I was also recently directed to a k&n option that also looks good for about $57. Is the barons BAK filter going to breathe any better than the round K&N or what? I want to get the better of the two products if the difference is only $20

Go with what looks better to you, both flow enough air.

Thanks. I like them both. If there isn’t a difference in performance, I’ll provably save some money and get the cheaper filter.

      What he said.

For that price I would get the Barons if it is in good condition. It will bolt right on without making brackets. It is a few hundred $ new. Although both excellent filters to me there is no comparison between the 2 in quality of product. Barons hands down. JMO

It is in good condition. I will work towards the barons. It has the filter that came with it. Is this filter maintenanced just like the k&n filters? Cleaned and re oiled

  • #4
So, the $75 includes shipping so I am going to pull the trigger on the barons cleaner.

Went ahead and god the barons. I ordered my Mikuni jets that you suggested as well so I am going to put it all together when I get the chance. Thanks Dave.

Any idea what this will likely do to mpg? Should I expect a noticeable difference in performance? Like 5 horses or so? I hope the mpg doesn’t take a big hit. I will deal with what ever if it livens up the bike a bit I suppose.

With a BAK,aftermarket exhaust and the carb properly jetted you should be able to achieve low to mid 40's mpg in certain highway driving conditions. The performance with these mods when compared to stock will be noticeable. the mpg will be less in town and from twisting the throttle having fun.

I can live with that. I have to count my miles anyways since my sending unit took a crap on me this fall. I will report back when I can on the upgrades when I get the weather to install and test it all.

      • #8
When you open the carb let me know what jets you find and I will let you know what changes to make with the mods you have. There is tested jetting that can be installed as a once and done jetting and no guessing.

I ordered the 37.5 pilot and 167.5 main. My carb is stock (35 pilot and 165 main) aside from the needle. I’m not sure the brand, but it has 6 slots for adjusting the height of the needle. Short shot V&H exhaust.

those are the correct jets, put the clip in the 4th groove with the spacer and 1 washer under the clip and set the pms screw between 2 1/4 2 1/2 turns out and set the idle speed at 900-950 and don't touch it again

Your mpg will be way lower once you feel how it opens up the power of your bike lol like Davej said good choice with the Barons bak.

Got the air cleaner today. It needs some cleaning and polishing, but for $75 its a sore dick deal in my opinion.

I suppose I didn’t pay attention earlier but it seems as though the boot did not come on the cleaner. I might have to try to modify my boot from the stock housing to work

Or contact Barons customer service and see if they can help with the correct one.

I didn’t buy it new. I slid the other boot on it. Seems fine as far as fit. I will try to install it on the bike and see if I need to remove any material on the boot. I don’t think I will have any issue.

Don't know about the Baron's but one thing I can say for the K&N is it really frees up some room for you right leg.

This one seems much thinner than the stock box. I didn’t have trouble with my leg hitting the stock box so I’m hoping this is the same or better.

You didn't have to buy it new for them to help out They might not send one free (But then again you never know) but I'm sure they can help if you need them to.

check out the K&N model 1980 universal filter. That is what I have and it looks great and fits perfectly

Hey fellas, I guess I was sent a boot for the intake. It doesn’t seem like any boot I’ve ever seen. It is very thin and pliable. I was curious if the guys who have the barons air cleaner think this sounds about right. The name on the envelope that it was sent in also didn’t say barons. It was another name. It seems more like a thick black band rather than a boot.

Sounds like a sock instead of a boot!
