  • K&N filter question

I am getting a free K&N filter. My question is about jetting. I’m under the impression I will not have to change my carb settings because it’s the K&N that is meant to go into the stock air box. So it’s not a high flow or anything as far as I understand. Am I wrong?

If you have stock exhaust you should be OK. At the most tweaking the PMS Screw would be needed but unlikely.

I have v&h short shots. I have my carb specs on my profile. I didn’t think the K&N would make much difference since it’s supposed to be the stock replacement for the stock air box.

using a k/n filter in the stock box along with shot shots I would at least put the needle clip in the 4th groove and check the plug color after a few miles. I think you are on the lean side now and the k/n will throw it a little more lean.

Keep the spacer and washer in the same position after the swap or adjust those as well?

Thanks for your time Dave. I appreciate the input.

If your 2000 Road Star has a completely stock air box and are using the K&N stock filter replacement, then no change is required for your carburetor. Test I have done shows a stock paper filter will flow 15 cubic feet of air in one minute, more than the K&N filter will flow. The stock replacement K&N Is a poor design, although the non-stock air boxes with K&N filters are great.

Duke look at his profile jetting. His carb has already been rejetted with an aftermarket kit and if it is a Barons it as I suspect the clip is in the wrong groove. A stock needle grove is equal to a barons 4th groove.and he has his in the 3rd groove right now according to his profile.

I am not sure how it’s counted but to clarify, that is the 3rd spot from the top of the needle. I’ll make the change you suggested in the spring and see what it does for me. I’m curious. Should I not get the filter if it flows less air? I just was wanting it for its reusability.

Thanks. I should of stated that if the bike was running good with his setting now. Yes, your.correct on the carb settings. Duke.

I think I would get a Universal K/N RC1980 or RA066V (about $50) and do it right. If you already have an adjustable needle buy a couple jets 167.5 Mikuni and 37.5 Mikuni pilot jet (Both for about $15) to throw in it. It is really an easy job as long as you don't mess with the float setting that isn't giving you problems now. you can do the whole thing correctly for under $75 and you won't regret the results in performance and mpg

BTW when counting the grooves count down from the flat end.

My needle is adjustable. I don’t know the brand of it. Is one filter you described much better than the other? I can probably buy the jets down the street at a local bike shop. I will likely need to make a bracket for the filters you are discribing correct?

Both filters are good just a different shape.1 is round and 1 is oval. I made a bracket for mine to help support it but a few members use the round one without a bracket. It don't take much to make a thin bracket that utilizes the 2 top bolt holes that the stock box uses

Good to know. I think they both look decent. I suppose the round one is more to my liking. Seems like it would infringe less on knee space. What should be done with the hose that goes to the back of my air box?

While looking at jets, there are a few different types from Mikuni. I was looking on jetsrus. Which type of jet should I be buying? When I looked by vehicle type it brought up kehien jets so I’m assuming that is an issue with the site.
