  • Accelerator pump orifice tube clogged

Is there an "easy" way to clear the orifice tube (short of soaking in chem)? I disassembled the carburetor but the tube is clogged. Long story, but reassembled everything. Engine runs fine, but I get nothing from the accelerator pump.

We here use Seafoam like it was going out of style, have you tried running a few tanks full with an extra dose or two? If that don't work, try and find an old guitar string to plunge it. Music stores always have some extras lying around. Also, be sure to check out the Tech Section for the article on adjusting the accelerator pump.

Lastly, from California. If you haven't already, be sure to fill out your profile, it will help us help you.

Second the guitar string, and a serious fuel system solvent like Techron. You’re gonna have to soak it for results.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

BTW, I'm the original owner of this 2005 1700 with V&H straight pipes, and I've always done my own work on it. I like the guitar string idea, but not sure how I can feed it into the problem area. I probably wasn't clear about what's clogged. It's the brass tube in the throat of the carb. The passageway starts at the bottom of the carb body (where the accelerator pump pushed fuel) then it makes a sharp right angle into the brass tube. Are you saying a guitar string can make that sharp turn?

        Thanks for you help, guys.

I would try to get a carb cleaner with the red plastic spray tube and spray it from the discharge hole back flush to the carb.If that don't work a good soaking should. I have removed those tubes in the past they are pressed in, then clean press back in and epoxy seal back into carb.

You might use a small syringe using some cleaning solvent and injecting it into the exit hole of the exceleratior tube.

Duke I was just thinking about this and I don't remember for sure but I think there might be a 1 way check in the system to keep fuel from flowing back to the bowl. Do you remember?

I know there is a check system in the float bowl, but I'm not sure if there is in the tube port. I've never removed that tube.

I know there isn't in the tube I wasn't sure where it was. but in the float bowl sounds correct. So with a check being in the float bowl, float bowl would need to be removed to spray cleaner thru it regardless of what side of the tube it was sprayed thru. Correct?

Yes, it would keep it from going backwards. Good point! He is going to have to remove the bowl. Thanks Duke.

              I would think so Dave.
I've had to clean the check balls, (valves) out in the float bowl before to get them to work. I just filled the plunger cylinder up with cleaner, than worked the plunger until they started working.

I haven't yet ever found a carb with a plugged exceleratior tube, but I'm "taking it" that Carl's tube is plugged.

My thoughts, and I'm sure it's your thoughts as well,: Is anytime a person cleans up the carb, a person should use compressed air to blow out all of the passages and ports to make sure their clean and open.

I second the use of air to clear the passages. Also, have you considered that maybe the pump isn’t working? The first time I took my carb apart, I almost lost the o ring that goes in the float bowl. Wrench off the pump and make sure all the passages are good as well. I suppose I should say test the function of the plunger first. When I take my bowl off, the pump has fuel in it and I can squirt the remaining fuel by depressing the plunger by hand. I feel like I worded this all very poorly. I just woke up about 30 minutes ago so forgive me.

No, you worded it just fine. I used compressed air to blow out all the passages when I had it disassembled. I know the pump is functioning because it squirts fluid from the outlet of the float bowl (where the o-ring is). I shot about 100 PSI air into the body through the passage leading to the brass tube. No luck getting any flow through it. I was trying to avoid a chem soak but guess I've got no choice, although at this point I'm almost beginning to doubt that even a good soak will open it because of the difficulty in getting the cleaning fluid to the area where it's needed.

back blow it from the orifice hole after a soak. The hole going back is bigger than the orifice hole and will discharge the blockage easier.

What Dave said, if that doesn't work, try what Doc said about the guitar string or try the syringe trick if you can get it into the outlet.

If that all fails, you might try heating it up, then start over.

There are various gauges of guitar strings, some would bend easier than others, but ideally, you'd want what's referred to as "wound" string. It's more abrasive and would better remove any gunk. You could always just buy a pack of electric guitar strings for a few bucks and see which one works best. Ask for a pack with a .009 High E string.

I have violin strings, I think the A,D and G is wound. The G for 4/4 full size is .0295 in diameter the others would be smaller in this order D and A , E is not wound but smallest dia.

Yesterday I finally had a chance to take the bike out for a ride, and I'm blown away with how smooth she runs. Idles beautifully and accelerates very cleanly without any spitting or backfiring. There's just no point in doing any further work on the carb at this time. I rarely ride this bike any more since I prefer riding my other one, so I've decided to sell it.

                        Thanks for all your input.

I'll certainly take bids. Guess I need to look for a 'for sale" section in this forum.
