  • Carbureted Road Star Owners

For all of the carbureted Road Star owners to be, or should be aware of.
Over the years I have noticed that every carburetor I have ran across and worked on, the Enricher valve covers has been cracked. Sometimes it's hard to see, and by taking a bright light to the back side of the cover, it will show any cracks. If there is any cracks, (more than likely there will be), then it will effect the idle, due to vacuum leaks.
I don't know why Mikuni made these out of plastic, or what ever their made of, but they won't last. Most all of the other carburetors Mikuni make have aluminum covers, and why they are different on our carbs is beyond me. Maybe for part sales and profits?, I don't know. Never the less, I had replaced a cover with a new one, only to have that cover crack as well after a couple of years. I believe that the high tension spring, along with heat and time causes the cover to crack.
So about 5 years ago, I decided to repair my old covers, and have had no problems with these repairs yet. I thought I would post this information for anyone that this could help out.

Nice fix, I'm assuming you used 1" flatbar cause you had some on hand but a guy could use wider and cover the whole cap?

Yes, that's right Mort. A person could use something that would cover the whole cover. You would want to have it strong enough to overcome the spring tension all of the time. Cheap and fairly easy.

Replaced mine 6 years ago and it's still good. Could be the difference in climate.

I think our climate is close to the same, north west New Mexico. I know your summers are a lot hotter and warmer winters, but it's pretty dry here. Always kept in the garage when not riding.

Mine is garage kept as well. Maybe my smaller air filter has something to do with its longer life. The smaller size allows more heat to escape that area and it also allows more wind into that area versus a stock filter.

Good point! My air box is a modified stock box.

That's good to know for the next time. I replaced mine about 5 years ago when I first bought mine.

Ya, I was upset when the new cover only lasted 2 years. That's what pushed me into doing something about it.
I tried to research aluminum covers, but had no luck.
If around a motorcycle scrap yard, a person might find a cover that would work.

I think if an all metal cover existed on some other application one of us would have found it by now.

Yes, that's what I was hoping for, maybe someone around a motorcycle salvage yard?

You can click on Subscribe at the top of the page. Not sure if that does the same thing as bookmark but it should save it somewhere for you.

If you right click and choose save as, it will store a copy of the page in your files. That's the best way I've found so far.

Could this cause my bike to break down at top end and act like it's starving for fuel? I've never checked mine, but it's now on the list!

It didn't seem that way to me. Plus, shouldn't you be able to do more than 70 in 4th gear?

LD are you planning on a lot of repairs or are some of those for sale? If so I would like one!

I'll second that motion. I wouldn't mind having one of those. Had to replace the one on my project bike, but wouldn't mind changing to one of those on my rider. Nice work LD.

No. Not selling. I was making one then two so I decided to make these. Now people are asking for them. I am sending them out for free. Only one left. If you want it I need your address. PM me. Sending Monday.

Those are great looking! Now I'm definitely going to have to check mine for cracks. Maybe make one of these covers just in case!

When slowing down with the engine, it will cause a lot of backfiring and popping, and change the pilot circuit by causing a lean condition.

                        Hi, still any left?
Will pay for the postage for sure. It may be the reason for backfiring even with AIS removed. Cheers
