  • Best carb jet kit

My 01 is in need of jetting and after looking at all of the options for jet kits, I'm not going to lie its became a little overwhelming. What is you guys opinion for the best bang for your buck? I live in North Ga. so I'm not sure which jet will optimize the performance of my carb. Thanks in advance.

Get the Barons kit. It is a couple extra $$ but that is the kit you will get the best advice and results from. If you have a 1600 with aftermarket air cleaner and aftermarket exhaust you will also need a 37.5 mikuni pilot jet that don't come in the kit. You will be installing a 167.5 main jet, 37.5 pilot jet, install the cliip in the 4th groove on the needle with the plastic spacer and 1 silver washer below the clip. Turn the pms screw 2.5 turns out. set the idle to 900-950 rpm. Then never touch it again. If you have never been into the carb leave the float alone.

Hello. Tell me please. The main jet 167.5 is the marking Mikuni? And the hole in the jet ~ 1.79mm.

Yes Autokad the 167.5 is a Mikuni jet. Not sure of the hole size.
That would be the jet for your 1600.
Put in a Mikuni #37.5 pilot jet in too.

keepitontwowheels if running no baffles I would use the larger main jet recommended by Barons. When running without baffles you may have to try a couple different main jets to get it to run somewhat correct but you may never get it to stop all the popping on decel. all you can do is get it close enough until you are satisfied with the performance.

davej gave you the recipe. Get the Mikuni parts and save some money. I use jetsrus.com. and ebay.
    Just a thought.

      +1 to what Dave said....
If it doesn't fit force it....if it breaks it needed to be replaced anyway....

Looking into this website, It show that 1600 and 1700 with different Carbs. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought both had Mikuni's. Also, A friend of mine installed a 172/39 jet setup. What would I gain if I go to a bigger jet?

Like said above, just buy OEM style Mikuni jets and save your money. I used the recommendations here for jet size and everything works great. I did buy a couple of extra main jets in different sizes just in case, but so far they have not been needed.

The carb for both 1600 & 1700 bikes is a Mikuni BSR40. There were a couple of insignificant changes thruout the years but all the inner parts are interchangeable for jetting or rebuilding purposes.

As dave mentioned buy the baron kit. It comes with a tapered needle you wont find anywhere else and it allows better adjustments with more slots for clip adj

I will be rejetting my carb following the great instructions found on this site. I ported my manifold also on my 04 R*. Got the information from Henry Swanson. I'm also installing a Baron's BAK and Cobra Long Shots. I need to replace the intake O-rings and I remember reading somewhere on the old site about a Napa part number that will work in place of the OEM O-rings. Anyone got that part number handy?
                  Thanks

Addressing multiple things above, the Barons and Dynojet needles are close, but the Barons kit at least comes with the Mikuni Main jets you will need. The pilot jet for a 1600 is Mikuni P/N N224.103.37. I highly recommend porting the intake manifold while you have the carb off. As to intake manifold O-rings, I surfaced my flanges and reinstalled the original O-rings with a little bearing grease. If you surface the flanges and install the intake correctly and evenly, it doesn’t need any blue goop on it. The blue goop was to fill in the manufacturing tolerance so they didn’t have to surface the flanges. BTW, everything Henry knows about Road Stars, he learned by “creeping” the RSC. He’s a decent guy, but he IS misguided on a couple of points by his own assessments which involve personal issues that don’t transfer to the general riding community. Take EVERYTHING on FB with a block of salt.

I'll agree with this statement. Again, no issues with Henry but more than one of us here on the actual forums have had a conflict with some of his "knowledge". He's looked up to highly on FB as a super guru but I think there's a reason you don't see him around here. Just my $.02.

Shane from SS Custom Cycles has an all Mikuni jet kit for our bikes and it has the needle. It was $59 as I recall. works great. If you need gaskets for the manifold I bought some from Auto zone. You can also call Shane and he'll answer all your questions.

Thanks for all of the advice. I believe I'll just buy the Baron kit to insure that I have everything I need. Hoping to jet, port and up the breather in a few weeks so we will see how well she peps up.

Keep in mind that even the Barons kit don't come with the correct pilot jet. They just send a new OEM size pilot jet which is a mikuni # 35. You need a #37.5 fo a 1600 and a # 40 for a 1700.

he has a 1600 so the 40 pilot is incorrect. He needs a 37.5 mikuni pilot jet.

That one is for a HSR carb but would physically fit the stock carb and work fine in the OEM carb. But you posted one for a 1700. although the OEM pilot won't fit a HSR carb, (it is just a hair longer and will smash on the end) the HSR pilot will fit and work fine in a OEM BSR 40 carb.
