  • Fuel Pump.

The fuel pump on my '02 Roadie has been acting up recently. First time, the bike quit running, but restarted quickly, and worked fine for a few hundred miles. Latest incident was a no start. The bike acted exactly like it was running out of gas, and the engine wouldn't keep running. I disconnected the fuel line at the carburetor, turned the key on, and found that the pump wasn't working. No fuel flow, no clicking noise. After a few more attempts, the pump did function for a few seconds. I plugged the line to simulate the float needle closing, to let the pressure in the line build up and turn the pump off. When releasing the pressure, the pump didn't restart. Removing the pump and hooking it directly to 12 volts showed a very intermittent operation. I took a look inside, and found the points were badly burned and eroded.. I'm waiting for a new pump from EBay. I know these pumps are no doubt Chinese knockoffs of the Mitsubishi pump that Yamaha uses, but I've used one in my '85 Vmax, and it works fine. I'll keep the forum updated on how this pump works. The original ran 83,000 miles before failing. The Vmax pump ran over 130,000 miles.

Geez you could of asked here and a few would of given it to you for cost of shipping probably. There are so many that have removed it. You are one of the very few that the pump was starting to fail.

What's wrong with any free world country. UH, like Japan? Like someone said, you could have asked here first or spent $26 on points NOT made by the commies. There are parts I'd LIKE to have, but they are only available from the little bastards in china, so I do without.

Turns out the problem is in the relay... 3EN-81950-00. Anyone out there got one they'd be willing to sell? My other option is to wire the pump directly to a 12V switch controlled wire and ground. I tried this when I got it home, it seems to work fine. The bike with the new pump installed quit about 2 miles from home. I got the side cover off, and tapped the relay with a screwdriver - the pump immediately started working, and made it home. I know this relay controls a lot of functions on the bike, everything else seems to work normally. AS of now, the relay is working the pump, but I have zero confidence it will continue. Is there any problem with wiring the pump to a key controlled 12 volt source? Shoulda went pumpless......

I think I have that relay.

Next time you get in a pinch, run a line from the petcock to the carb inlet and carry on. It works. Not as well as a proper pumpless setup, but it works.

Ran the new pump to switched source of 12 volts and pump works great. Easily reversed to stock if I get a new relay. I kept the ground wire hooked up stock, into the wiring harness so it's just a one wire swap to get it back to as it was. 50 miles later, it works fine.

I wound up going from a switch controlled fuse through a relay to the pump. It works fine. But I still carry the fuel line in the bag. Ya never know.
