First time witness carb puke!

  • First time witness carb puke!

    Well went for a ride on my xs due to a recent tune up. Then went for a ride on my R*. Got home parked the bike then went to adjust the cam chain tensionner on my xs and heard like a hose spraying. Turned around and saw this!! Gas all over and evaporating upon hitting the exhaust pipe. First time for everything i guess. Petcock was closed too. Came out the vent pipe right on the floor lol. Out of nowhere Puke!!! Click image for larger version

      [SUB]Still waiting on it to happen to my '99... it must be one of them scary stories they tell around the campfire.

        Hopefully just the stories around the fire and not the gas puke. :blaze:

      Put a hose on the overflow and run it down under the bike! I have heard of the bike on fire due to the puking! Mine does it after a long ride in hot weather. If you cut off the petcock about thirty seconds prior to shutting it down it won't happen. If it does happen and you try to start the bike soon after it will be flooded.

            I had it happen once to me a couple of weeks ago when it was in the 90's and I went for long ride. Shortly before I stopped we were in slow traffic with stop lights.

              Gonna hose the vent down below the bike. Any pics of where to run the vent without being obvious in front of the engine? Yeah maybe my R* was jealous....been spending lots of time on my XS lately lol it just finds it sickening lol

                I went straight down behind the rear push rod cover and zip tied it to the bracket under the bike where the other vent tube is.

                    that is the same way I did mine. I tried the K & N filters that you have, but returned it. Does it not vibrate a lot with just the hose clamp holding it on.

                      I dont find. I had the round one on and got paranoid and added brackets to it. I ended up removing it cause the brackets kept it from sealing good and cause an air leak. And i found out another member here had a nut suck in the intake. Got this one on amazon for $21. Was thinking maybe getting the same looking one but filter area wider. Would like a BAK but not gonna pay that much for it.

                        Not sure if I need to make a bracket or just go with the clamp and safety line.

                          When I had the same one installed it worried me that it would shake the carb loose. It vibrated so much up and down that it was real close to hitting the bottom edge of the tank. Went back to the BAK I already had. Just my experience with them. I see a lot of people are running them

                            When i st got my 06 R* it used to do the same thing with excessive heat being the root cause.

                            I took approx 1hr/$20 to insulate the metal fuel line between the cyls,the meat body of the elec f-pump along with also insulating the carb loat bowl too using adhesive backed 1200 deg f eat insulation and it never puked fuel again (even in 95deg F) for the 6yrs i owned the bike after that with stock f-pump never giving up.

                            My friends 05 R* used to puke fuel when hot too till i insulated his R* @ 50kish miles some yrs back like i did to mine,it hasnt puked fuel since then either and his bike is still running the stock elec f-pump too being just shy of 80k miles.

                            And when running stock oem or billet al air cleaner cover you cant see most of the insulation on the carb too.

                            No fuss no muss without having to go pumpless hasteling with recalibrating carb along with new larger hi flow needle & seat etc,my friend & myself had collectively
                            had 105k miles & 25yrs srv'c on the stock oem elec f-pumps on our R*'s with as of yet no oem elec fuel pump failure. bwfore i sold my 06 Silverado.

                            And if we were to run into a elec f-pump failure he had fuel line & fitting on boards to bypass pump to get home and i always had a spare elec oem f-pump in a saddle bag too both of which took up little room and not much wt either.

                            So if the elec pump was to fail someday on the road it would take approx 5-20 mins to swap it out and be on the way with no hastle of going pumpless along with all the associated PIA many guys go thru when trying to get their bikes sorted out/running right again post going pumpless when heat is the root cause of carb puke and the oem elec f-pumps being considerably more reliable then is made out to be here in RSC.

                              Hi Scott. This has not happen to me that I have seen. It could of happened but was not around to witness. I do too still have a fuel pump but has been relocated under the tank. I was on my bike for maybe an hour or a little more. It was hot but not overly. Been in a same scenario often but just happen to puke this time I guess. I dont have any insulation arouns the fuel line only a 5/16" rubber line.

                              Something did sound different when i turned it off. When i turned off the key, the bike when silent. Usually it has either a little wine down or even starter spin but as if it stalled. Something that I never experienced. I started the bike up for maybe 20 seconds then off again. Then took off my helmet and coat the grabbed my tools to take apart the cam chain adjuster nut on my XS and kersplat......on the floor!
