  • Carb type?

    Hello everyone
In an attempt to replace my enricher knob (plastic threads stripped some time ago) I am trying to get some info on the carbs I have
My bike is a 2003 road star 1600
From what I have seen online everything is saying its a mikuni 40 but im not sure what model it is
does anyone have experience swapping out the enricher from another mikuni?
$85 seems steep for such a simple part, there are a few HD ones for mikuni carbs that are around $30 just curious if I could swap them out

Good question about he swapability. To the best of my knowledge, this isn't an off the shelf Mikuni carb. I've tried finding info on the specific model in the past with no such luck. It may be specific to the R* but something like the enricher knob should be standard. Have you looked for used knobs on line? Someone here who's upgraded to the HSR 42 may have an extra knob available. If no one chimes in with an answer try posting a new thread requesting a knob.

    Best of luck.

It's a Mikuni BSR40 and the cable is cheaper here https://www.boats.net/product/yamaha/4WM-14130-00-00, or here https://www.partzilla.com/product/ya...WM-14130-00-00

If the threads on the knob is the only issue try epoxy of some sort. I would find a way to get it back on there without spending all that money. I believe I used my stock cable on my HSR45 when I swapped it out on my bike so there are others that will work. You would just have to make sure the length was correct or mount it in a different location.

I use an 1100 V* choke cable & mounted it to the back side of the K&N 1980 filter. It comes off with the filter & is very handy to reach.

So i ended up finding one on ebay
Smoothbore Parts Choke Cable - H-D with HS-40 Carbs Mikuni 990-662-001
          it was a direct fit!
Cost about 30$ and it had a steel section/ retaining nut instead of plastic so it should be solid
The only differences I can tell is
It was a bit shorter than the oem cable which was fine with me because I already had mine mounted on a bracket I made where the fuel pump used to be (cable routed over intake manifold)
Also it springs back into place instead of being held out which I don't really mind since I usually only need it out for about a minute
I suppose if you needed to have it stay out for longer you could use the old clothes pin behind the knob method (how I got a bike I was buying home once with dirty carbs)
All in all I'm pleased, no more plastic nonsense

After messing with the choke cable for a while I realized the tension on it was what was making it not stay out when it was pulled.
I took the entire thing off and trimmed just the black sheath part of the cable (just the black part not the actual cable)
This in turn shortened the sheath a little and increased the stick out of the cable from the sheath
that allowed the tension to be relieved and now the choke knob stays out when pulled.

There is a tension nut right behind the knob that sets the tension. When you trimmed the sheath you must have tightened the tension nut. Trimming the sheath in itself would not have made the the correction.

This is what I'm thinking too.

The sheath length is in correlation with the stick out of the cable
I've illustrated it in the attached picture, it is a side view of the cable
The top is the length it came, the stick out was a bit short which kept tension on the cable
The bottom is the sheath shortened, increasing the cable stick out

It was kind of tricky to get a little bit off without touching the cable but it beats melting some lead to make a new cable end

I follow what you are saying now. you have the wrong cable and had to trim the sheathing to make it work.

exactly, it worked I just had a little too much tension on it

The stock cable online was around $70 I believe
This one was 10$ and took about 10 mins of work to make it fit

I actually bought it on ebay for 30$
Afterwards I found the same one online for $10 plus shipping

It looks for the right one but I can't say for sure
From what I understand the carb on the roadstar is similar to the hs40 model
