  • Barons Kit

    I noticed on the Barons kit they suggest installing a different main jet depending on weather you have baffles installed or you don't. I installed some quite bafflers awhile back and have been having what appears to be heavier exhaust smell than before. Would adjusting the pilot screw to a leaner setting until I can install the correct jet be a wise thing to do? I'm not sure of what jetting is in the bike now. It has always run fine, so I have not checked or changed the jetting. I do plan on ordering the correct jets and baron needle soon. I know it has a OEM needle. That was replaced when I bought it.

    Order a barons kit and don't try to cobble anything else together. You'll just rack your brain trying to get it right. especially if you don't have any idea what is in there now you'll have no idea where to go. If you have a 1600 also order a #37.5 pilot jet and if you have a 1700 order a #40 pilot along with the kit.

      That's what I plan on doing. Will adjusting the pilot to leaner until I get the Barons help with the heavy exhaust smell. I have checked for leaks and did not find any. Smells like it is rich. When I got the bike the PO had it a 1.5 out. I adjusted it to 2 3/8 by idle. Maybe I have it to rich? Apparently the baffles do make a differnece or the Baron kit would not be calling for another main jet, Right?

      Main Jet Settings ’99~’03 Models 167.5 Stock pipes 170 Pipes w/ baffles 172.5 Pipes w/o baffles
      ’04~’07 Models 170 Stock pipes 172.5 Pipes w/ baffles 175 Pipes w/o baffles

        Without the AIS, and with aftermarket pipes, it’ll smell richer then a car that has stock exhaust and a catalytic converter.
        Both of mine are 2 3/8 out, or close to it.

        I’m with Dave. Don’t over think this, or it’ll make your head hurt.

          I understand what you guys are saying. I don't know what jetting has been done. The PO said that a mechanic told him it was jetted correctly (what ever that means?) and it does run good. But I'm going to order the Baron kit and a 40 pilot and make sure it is correct. Hell, y'all have worked it out with the jetting I just need to follow your directions! Might just run a lot better? I have owned other bikes, one being a V-star 1100 and never came home smelling like exhaust like I do from Road Star ride? My pipes run all the way back to the rear of the bag. I'm puzzled?

            If it was jetted at the dealership it probably has a Speedstar kit in it or they shimmed the needle and put in a monster pilot jet. Even the Speedstar kit uses a #50 pilot jet. That is way too big,I'm not sure how Speedstar figured that to be correct when it isn't. My guess is that you can start your bike without using the choke or using it very little. That is an indication of too large of pilot jet like the dealership installs with a Speedstar kit.

              Thanks for the help guys! I'm going to order the correct jets and make sure it's correct. On a cold start I don't have the choke out maybe 10 seconds and I can push it back in and it'll Idle pretty good at that point and I can ride. The wrong jet may very well be the issue. Thanks again.
