  • My Road Star is flooding out...

    Jetted last year and have been out 20 times this season. All of a sudden the idle slowly drops and the bike stalls. Took the air filter off and watch the carb flood with fuel. It is coming from the right hole just above the bowl. When cruising all is fine. Floats sticking? Suggestions?

    Based on what you gave us information wise, I suspect the needle and seat(float valve) letting fuel past. Either something preventing them from closing properly, or the ring that seals the seat is failing. If the fuel pump is still on the bike, it'll push fuel right past the oring and flood the bowl regardless of what the float is doing.

      Ok... So I replaced the needle and seat with the one that is recommended for going pumpless (for when I decide to do it). Oddly now when I try to start it using the enricher it won't start but if the enricher is off it starts like as if it is pulled out. Seems to be running fine but smells a little rich. Is it possible that something weird happened with the enricher and when it is pushed in it's on. When I have it pulled out it won't start unless I give it a lot of gas and it almost sounds like its backfiring. I'm at a loss. I did not remove the carb when I did the float needle and seat.

        Because you are now getting too much fuel. Bypass the fuel pump

          Wouldn't the needle and seat only affect how fast the bowl fills?

            The Pump and float are always finding a happy medium, based on the fuel level in the bowl and the pressure the pump applies to the end of the needle where it seals in the seat. Hence the need for a proper float level.
            The gravity flow needle and seat used for going pumpless, has about twice the surface area exposed to the fuel pressure generated by the pump. It's not a big thing, but it can result in the fuel level having to be slightly higher in the bowl, before the float can apply enough pressure to fight back. That elevated level, can result in a rich condition at the start. If it's rich at the start, then it'll probably be rich everywhere else.

            I'd check the float level per the Yamaha method. It may have been changed a bit when doing the needle and seat swap, and if you're sticking with the pump, you may want to change the setting so it works with the pump. Check the tech Articles section, for how to set the float level.

              Stock float seat is 1.5mm, if you went with the 3mm seat with the fuel pump, than it's going to overfill the bowl. Bypass the fuel pump. You need to set the float level, period! Like SKWEARpeg said, it's the surface area of the needle and seat.

                I stand corrected... You were 100% correct. The minute I took the pump out and hooked up the new fuel line and pulled the enricher she started right up. I havent rechecked the bowl level yet but the bike never sounded better. The only issue is when I shut off the enricher and it drops down to normal idle there is a decent lag (and occasional carb pop) when i give it throttle. Would that mean the bowl is to high or low or just have to do some PMS adjusting? Thanks again for the input. I have no idea why I would have doubted you guys...
