  • Off idle stumble

I looked at an '02 tonight for a friend. The bike is in really good shape and would be a good buy.... If it wasn't for a wicked of idle stumble. Even rolling down the hiway, and you're running very light throttle, almost closed off, if you roll into it...... Stumble. And if you leave it in that spot, it doesn't clear up, it'll keep farting around, sometimes stalling. It starts and idles fine, runs hard past that spot.

The kicker, the seller had it in a shop to get it fixed, and they couldn't. I've attached the write up from the shop.

The bike has a K&N air filter and a two into one exhaust, make I don't know .

Buy it! Easy to fix with advice from the carb folks here.

Could it be as simple as the choke not connected and stuck open? My bike runs like you have described when the “enrichener” is pulled and I’m trying to sneak out in a hurry.

Could be as simple as a can of Seafoam.
Worse case, with a little carb work and less then a C note in parts if need be, it should run fine.

The clip in the third without a shim is way lean on the needle. The leanest anyone’s ever managed to make it work in the 3rd, is with the fat spacer and two shims under the clip when it’s in the third.
The 4th with just the fat spacer and no shim is as lean as I’d go on the needle.

I’d also change the needle and seat(which they did)I’d wager the fuel in the oil resulted from the oring on the seat being shot.

The 180 Main, even if it’s a DJ Main is plenty big. A 167.5 Mikuni would be dandy.
        If it’s a DJ 37.5 Pilot, It’s no bigger then a Mikuni 35. It should be a Mikuni 37.5.

Definitely interested in hearing some thoughts from the carb guys .I'm pretty sure it's a fuel issue.

I concur on the oring issue on the needle seat. Had that exact same issue with the wife's 05.

Yeah I saw that later. Hence the DOH!! There were several things I skipped over. Another was the sonic carb cleaner thingie.

We're at approximately 3000 ft, any recommendations on carb set up ? What about intake leak, wouldn't that cause a bit of off idle stumble?

yes. Check the jetting stuff I added. Lean on the needle will definitely cause a bad stumble. Until the airflow lifts the slide and needed fuel starts coming in around the needle, it’ll run like crap.

I should have elaborated more on your question about an air leak. It’s pretty common for a leak to develop at the head to manifold flanges, from repeatedly removing and replacing the carb. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing, but it happens.

Get the needle right, and the bike should at least work like it’s supposed to. With the clip in the 3rd and no shim(hopefully the fat spacer was there), it is so lean in the transition between the Pilot to Main, the bike will bulk and buck from a lack of fuel. If the fat spacer was missing also, the needle elevation is closer to having the clip in the 2nd groove. The closer to the top(blunt end)of the needle, the leaner the transition.

I think(guessing) they probably used a DJ kit. The 180 DJ according to the chart in the Tech Articles, is just a wee bit larger then the Mikuni 167.5. If it is a DJ kit, then I wouldn’t worry about the 180 main.

It's been a while since I dealt with that same issue on mine, but needle was my first thought as well. IIRC. The short answer is it's no biggie and easy to fix. But don't tell the dealer that. Use it as a bargaining point. Get them to throw in some extra goodies or something.

Where in Canada, I got my 04 for 2500.00 ca. Most of the R*'s in my area have been on KIJIJI for far too long, the only ones selling are in the 3000.00 range. I'm in the GTA

Yeah from what I have seen the best prices here in Canada on kijiji are in Quebec. The ones around the Atlantic region where Iive are still pretty high. I know the insurance on motorcycle in Quebec is quite high so alot of people are trying to sell. My cousin is in Quebec City and has mentionned this to me many times. I dont know if I trust him cause he rides a HD.....lol opps was that brand bashing.

Road Star clinic for the win again!! My buddy ended up getting the bike for $3000 because of the issue, I moved the clip from the third slot to the fifth, problem fixed !!

Was there anything under the clip before you moved it, or were the fat plastic spacer and shim(silver washer) missing in action? I noticed in the OP, the shim was removed when they moved the clip to the third, but I don’t remember what happened to the fat spacer.
With the clip in the 5th and no shim or spacer(if it’s gone) under the clip, the real elevation is probably closer to a 3 or 3.5.

Anyhoo, glad that worked out. Good on ya!!

                                    Agree!

For example, there is an 08 R* silverado w-efi on cycle trader in great cond with 813 original miles on it in great cond listed as asking $4,795.

Another example,I just bought a 2012 Silverado with 1,250 original miles on it from original owner in like new cond for $5,800 that had a $7,000+ book value
                                    at the time.

When i sold my 06 silverado in 2015 in like new cond with new tires, tune up & oil & filter change that just turned 25k miles i had trouble getting $4k for with a $5,200 book value at the time.

The R*'s do not hold value well but you sure get a lot of motorcycle for the money with the R* thats rock solid reliable & will 100k+ miles with proper maint.
