  • Need advice/Help fuel issues!

This is my first post and Iam looking forward to hearing from you guys. I have a 99 Road Star 1600 and Iam having fuel issues. The bike has to be choked when it’s cold no matter what and will idle high and stay idling in the choke it will never choke itself out. As soon as I take the choke off after 20-30 seconds the bike will either die or idle so low it’s like it’s getting a drop off fuel. After starting it 4-5 times with the choke and giving it some throttle it will idle out of the choke but still very low. I can get it in gear and get it going up to speed and the throttle doesn’t skip a beat it has perfect response. But, as I decelerate it’s back firing and sputtering and wants to cut off or continue to idle so low at a stop. Iam baffled. When I bought it it didn’t have the backfiring and sputter. It has cobra pipes on it and Iam not sure if the previous owner rejetted the carbs. Any ideas or questions you have will be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

Please post the details about your bike in your profile so folks can help you. Keep the choke/enricher out at least half way until it warms up amd idles. Make sure the idle is set at 900 rpm. If it has been sitting for a while, you may have ethanol fuel that has turned to gel in the fuel system. Run a half bottle of Seafoam in the tank. Dump the slipons. Remove the AIS if it hasn’t been removed already. Read this entire thread below.

What Shores linked is a must read.
Next, if it ran o.k. before try the sea foam.
To start, pull the choke all the way out, after 10 seconds or so it will start to lope a little, put choke half way in, now you can ride. after a few blocks put the choke all the way in. If the idle drops way down there is an idle adjustment on the right side down low between the push rod tubes. Give it a twist to raise the idle, The bike should be completely warmed up before adjusting the idle.
More people will chime in shortly with more knowledge. Just try one thing at a time so if it doesn't work you can put it back.
They are awesome bikes and pretty bullet proof, just take your time and ride a lot.
It's not that life is so short, it's just that you're dead for so long.---unknown.

Thanks for the replies going to go give it a whirl. Iam going to look into getting the exhaust put back to stock. I think a lot of the issues may be stemming from that.

Ok first off road stars DO NOT have a choke. They have an enricher which adds more fuel. That's why the idle stays up and won't go down until the enricher is pushed back in.

Ethanol and gas do not turn to gel when they get old they turn into turpentine.

You need to clean your carb. It is also the best way to find out what jets you have.

Do not adjust the idle until your bike is completely warmed up. Mine usually takes at least 15 minutes Also this will not make up for a dirty carb.

What kind of air cleaner does it have? Is the AIS removed?

Don't worry about your pipes for now, if ever

All good advice. As Tug mentioned, it’s an Enricher, not a Choke. It adds fuel. Hence the high idle as the bike is warming up.
The 900rpms set with a hot motor is important. If the idle is set as low as the motor will still run when hot, you can turn the idle as low as 650 or so. The only problem is, that low of an idle causes problems everywhere else.
Seafoam, Techron, or Marvel Mystery Oil are all good to add to your fuel, to keep the insides of the carb squeaky clean.

You can can google Roadstar 900rpms and get a link for a vid JD750 posted, with audio of what 900rpms sounds like.

Actually, the enricher circuit pulls both [more] air and and fuel around to the backside of the throttle butterfly for a richer fuel/air mix and that is what gives it a higher idle with the throttle butterfly closed.

Chokes usually incorporate a cam plate to override the throttle stop screw to speed the idle up for a smoother warmup period.

Typically the choke system reduces the air flow at start up, which give a richer A/F mix at the start. Hence the term choke.
IIRC. The good old days. :^)

Yes it does by creating a higher vacuum environment in the throttle bore after the throttle plate so it can draw on the fuel circuit(s) harder to create a richer mix even and if the throttle is opened it still is restricting air to keep the vacuum up.

An enriching circuit depends on the throttle being closed to create the needed vacuum to pull the added fuel/air mixture through the cold start circuit to fatten up the mix.

I get your gist, as most on here that were tearing carbs apart on anything that adorned them before we even got a driver’s license.

Just some nomenclature for the noobs.

I understand what Tug said about leaving the pipes alone. Shouldn’t we be looking to see if it has been rejetted properly if you’re leaving the pipes on?

Check the enrichment valve cover on the carb for cracks. Most older covers have cracks in them causing air to leak in thru the cracks.
