  • HSR 42 proper jetting for BAK with freedom duals

Just as the title states, getting ready to rejet a friends bike. He is running either an HSR 42 or 45 carb and I need the proper jetting specs for both. The bike is an '01 1600 with a BAK and a set of Freedom True duals.

I searched the old posts but didn't find the exact jetting needed. I apologize in advance for asking yet another jetting question, I know we are all sick of reading them, but I need help with this one.

    thanks in advance

There is no such thing as a one size fits all. Elevation and what needle is also needed (there is 3 different sizes). I had a 1700 and my jetting was 175 main, 37.5 pilot, 3rd clip on the 97 needle, elevation was about 600ft.

What Smokes said. The real beauty and simplicity of a CV carb becomes readily apparent when working on HSR jetting.

        hey smokes and Skwear,

Elevation is 5280ft (Denver) and the needle has 4 grooves. It looks to be a maxair kit that he has.

You want gas mileage or giddy up n go?

Neither or both. He is jetted really rich, throttle response is perfect but he is blowing so much black smoke out the pipes he may as well be rolling coal with a diesel. I stuck my hand behind the front jug pipe on his freedoms and it stained my hand black!

He he is wanting to just get it back into line and lean it out a bit.

I know enough about carbs to be dangerous but this will be my first HSR rejet. Please forgive my ignorance, just trying to help a buddy out.

        Is there a
PMS" type screw that can be adjusted to get a leaner mixture?

Yamaha dealer wouldn’t even touch his bike because of the aftermarket carb and Harley dealer wouldn't touch it because it doesn't say "Harley Davidson" on the side. Indy mechanics wanted $180+ an hour to tune the carb and gave no guarantees.

97 needle. Clip 3rd slot from the blunt end. 25 or 27.5 pilot. 1.5 to 2 turns out on the PMS. 170 main. That's what most *people* recommend.
My *Bike* on the other hand prefers to be set leaner.
It's sluggish when I run it rich.

I'm still dialing in my HSR 42 on one of my RS, as you said was running very very rich at my elevation of 5100'.
The settings I have now is: 62.5 (was 65) main jet, #96 needle, clip on the 3rd (was 2nd) slot from the bottom, #20 (was 25) pilot jet, PMS screw 2 1/2 turns out. I went on a short test ride and I believe I'm getting very close, but think it's is running a little on the lean side. My thoughts are changing the pilot jet back to what is was when when starting, a # 25. Need to do a good, long test run to see. I'll let you know what I find out.
The bike has a free flowing air box, HardKrome 2 into 1 pipes, ported heads and manifold, hp pistons, pumpless, and running the TPS.

        Just a little tidbit.

The PMS on the HSR controls air, not fuel like on the CV 40.

ie, if you turn the PMS in on a HSR, the a/f ratio gets richer, not leaner.
