  • 2008 Roadstar Power problem

    Hey guys, After being away from a roadstar for 8 years, I bought a very nice 2008 copy with 14k on it. I had a pre buy inspection done, including all fluids and it has run fine for 1000 miles. Most recently when I was riding it though I have noticed a major lack of power. Anytime I roll on the throttle, the engine bogs down with an occasional backfire. My last roadstar was a carb version, this one is EFI. I am going to go thru and change fuel filter, air filter, and spark plugs. Looking for further suggestions after those basic changes. Any other maintenance recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!!! Edit: Vacuum hoses are on the list to change, and I’m guessing a fuel tank cleaning is going to happen as well since I have to pull the fuel pump to change the fuel filter. Looking for the ID for those vacuum hoses if anyone has it handy!

    Can't easily change fuel filter...it's in fuel pump assembly in tank.

      When I installed my cruise control last winter I picked up 5/32 vacuum tubing from Napa. Used 3/16 connectors with it. Everything seemed to fit good and snug.

        First question would be does it have aftermarket intake and exhaust and was an aftermarket fuel processor installed. If so, remove the fuel processor and your problems may go away. Use the stock ECU fuel processor.

          It is a completely stock system, no aftermarket performance devices, tunes, or exhaust.

            Also I presume there are no flashing codes from the check engine light on the dash?

              Run a bunch of seafoam or techron plus concentrate through the fuel tank according to instructions on the can.

                Check to see if your air/fuel mixture is inefficient or your air filter possibly dirty. If your air filter is clogged or has a lot of dirt. It could be bogging down the engine. Consider cleaning the air filter or replacing it with an air kit to see if the problem is resolved.​ And as Shores mentioned run Seafoam for cleaning.

                  It's a 2008 fuel injected bike so no fuel air adjustment.

                A followup: fuel pump has lots of black flakes coming out of it. Fuel pump replaced (Kemso 13501) spark plugs replaced, and everything reassembled. Fuel is flowing when the pump turns on, but bike won’t start. II think I am past my pay grade and frustrated. Its time to take it to a pro. So…..now to find a trailer.

                  Not familiar with that brand is that the OEM part? If not you'll really want to get an OEM fuel pump if you continue to run a fuel pump and not go pumpless.

                  It’s not the OEM part, but it is a direct fit in the OEM’s location and housing. The pump is working, and fuel is flowing when the key is turned on. The bike is 2008, which is EFI, so pumpless isn’t an option.

                Pump could be flowing but if the fuel pressure regulator took a crap then if won't build any pressure. No pressure no spray from fuel injectors.
