needle grooves

years back I remember someone modifying the stock needles and putting extra grooves in them. I got one, and it worked just fine. I'm thinking maybe from DaveJ, but my old man brain doesn't really remember who for sure. Anyway, I have 3 or 4 of these stock needles now and figured I might as well modify them when I get some free time. I have the ability to do this. Does anyone know what dimensions they are modified too? Is it just adding the grooves, or is there any change to the angle? Thanks

I have a whole bunch of stock needles too. If somebody can get these to mimic the barons needle it would save people a lot of money

I modified a stock needle. I didn't add grooves I re-tapered it and cut to the same length as a Barrons needle. I found that the groove in the stock needle is in the same location as the 4th groove of a barons needle so no need to re-groove. I brought a few of them to Celina and installed them in members bikes the year I was tuning carbs in the parking lot.

I would assume a machine shop could taper the stock ones down to the same dimensions as the Barons? I must have 6 or 7 stock needles...might be worth taking them in to get done..

thanks for the info. I'll get some measurements and try to see how hard this would be to do. My only real thought about it would be if that small dia. would flex sticking out that far while trying to cut it. I've got a couple of them, so if I scrap them it's no big deal anyway. Just finding time to get on a lathe maybe tricky for a little while.

I did it in a drill press and used a digital mic and fine flat file. Don't make more of it than it is and you will be fine.

Cike...got 7 stock needles coming to you and a Barons ...should be to you by end of week

in the pic it appears that you have the pointed end on both needle resting on the table evenly and that puts the groove of the oem needle at around 3 1/2 on the barrons. if that is what you are doing that is not the way to measure the groove line up. The pointed end of the oem needle is gonna be cut shorter and after it is cut when resting both on the table like you have in the pic it will drop to being even with the 4th groove.

I knew this conversation sounded a bit familiar. After a little searching I found a post where davej shared some measurements regarding the taper of different needles. I was interested in it as I got an intake for my '03 and it came with a carb kit that had an adjustable needle. I want to measure it and see how it compares to those listed in this thread.

Wondered about that ..and I noticed the blunt end "tips" aren't even when putting pointy end on table!
