Burning Rich ?

After a few weeks of Personalizing , this '05 with 32000 miles fired as quick as any I've owned . After running around for 42 miles I noticed very BLACK exhaust tip ! It ran very smooth and responsive at all speeds. If this Soot is because it's running to rich , what should I do . 170 main jet 37.5 pilot , 2.5 turns out om pilot mixture screw .

whats your gas mileage per gallon? of intake and exhaust installed? could be high float level, or enrichener cable/circuit doesnt close all the way.

If it's running rich, then drop the needle one clip.
If this is the carb that I worked on, then the emulsion tube is more sensitive to the needle settings.

you are already jetted with 1600 jetting so it shouldn't be rich. The exhaust tip will have some black color to it. That isn't a good way to determine state of tune. I say leave it alone and ride it. Maybe in about 1000 miles or so pull a plug and see what it looks like if you still have any concerns.

I know his profile says 1600, but I think the bike he is talking about is a 1700.
His carb main jet is the 170.

Duke I was looking at the post. It says the bike is an 05 so it is a 1700 and light on the jetting.

Your in the light side for a 1700 for sure on the jetting....

Should be 172.5/40 for jets...did you inspect the plugs? Mileage?

I'm in the process of correcting my steering . This is my first Trike and it steers like a fully loaded Semi with no power steering ! WOW !!! Talk about stiff , it's a Major Workout to just get through a curve . Probably need Raked Triple Trees . So, with all that said , I haven't had the Ride time to check mileage or get more than 42miles ,for the need to pull plugs .

The folks that I ride with that ride trikes constantly complain about their gas milage. The trikes are usually the ones that limit how far the group can ride before we stop for fuel. Also our speed is affected, for instance if ridden at 65-70 MPH we can ride 90 miles but ride at 70-75 and we stop every 70 miles for fuel. Trikes and sportys will slow you down, but then no trikes or sportys and the R* tank is smaller than Harley baggers.

trike has a bigger drag coeficient, and wide bars helps steering

before i get a tike or sidecar, its nice to have the raked triple trees already done. pricey parts, especially on heavier bikes

My little vstar 650 is stock rake with sidecar...not terrible to toss around. But it's prob 180-220 bs lighter than my Road Stars.

I`m not poor guys but I`m not burning rich .
