  • Bone head move!

Never use a cutting wheel that’s too big. Started to do Barons rejet, float bowl screw started to strip so went to cut screw to use flathead on it only touched for a second and you can see result. Anyone have a float bowl for stock carb 2001 1600 R*? Everywhere I look you can’t buy it separate it seems, going to check with Bubbakahuna but if anyone has one you would like to sell PM me Please. Was suggested to use JB Weld but over time seems it would deteriorate.

What a drag! Use a Dremel next time.

In the end used needle nose Vise grips. Just wasn't thinking

I think I’d clean that up real good in and out with a wire brush, put some flux on it and fill it with solder. A smaller heat source other then a regular plumbing torch used for sweating pipes, might be necessary to control and direct the heat to that area.
Or, clean it up real good. Wire brush inside and out in that area, and try some JB weld epoxy. Make sure it squishes to the inside of the bowl, and spread slightly on the inside.
Soldering would be my first choice.

The JAS Phillips style screw heads cause problems for people from time to time. The screwdriver in the Roadie tool kit, has the proper JAS tip.
Grinding or cutting the head off the screws when necessary, and after removing the bowl turning the screw shaft out is a great way when needed to remove the screws when the heads are trashed.

If I don't find a bowl I'll go for solder. Are you talking about a small hand held torch that could fit in your pocket size?

When I went through my carb, two of the bowl screws were already rounded out. Tried needle nosed vice grips, they wouldn't break them loose. I used a 2 inch sanding disc on a right angle die grinder and sanded the heads off of the damaged screws and removed the bowl and then replaced with four allen head screws when I reassembled my carb. But I agree with trying to solder the bowl. I have also had real good luck with JB weld holding up around gas. just my humble 2 cents.

I would take it to a reputable shop that has a TIG and have it welded. It would be best to use the bowl screws and mount it to a plate to keep it from distorting when being welded.

Bad advice, likely cast pot metal not aluminum.

  • #5
Mort, I haven't seen a pot metal carb since the 70's (except on mowers and other small engines). That carb should be a decent quality aluminum.
Pot metal carbs were made of zinc. You can tell the difference between aluminum and zinc just by it's appearance. Don't believe me-call Yamaha.

You will notice the flame close to the part turns orangy red when it reaches the right temp.

I would go with the jb weld.., it is simple and easy and is completely resistant to gas after it is cured...
not all those who wander are lost......

You need the “flex tape” it will hold your boat together when you accidentally cut your boat in half.

That's a drag... Sorry to hear. Fortunately this stuff called Dura Fix is perfect to fix your prob. It's made specifically for repairing stuff like that and only requires a propane torch. http://www.durafix.com

The idea will look something like the Durafix vid Docv posted. The Durafix May be a great solution.
Not a handheld torch as much as a smaller tip on a regular propane bottle. A regular propane torch might be fine, I’m just not sure.
Flashbacks comment about the JB weld makes that look like a really good idea also. Just prep the area good so the JB can get a good grip on the surfaces around the cut both inside, and on the outside of the bowl.

Thanks to everyone for advice I took DocV advice found some aluminum solder (Harbor Freight) cleaned it up and solder worked perfect. Thanks again. Thing is if I had just used needle nose in first place but crap happens no one died so move on.

Believe me, I know the "oh shit!" feeling in the pit of your stomach, when something like that happens. Just glad to hear it all worked out.
