  • Use aftermarket oil tank as auxiliary fuel tank?

My 2.5 gallon frisco tank just isn't cutting it. All this engine only 80+ miles at a time. But hey, looks over function.

But I figured I can get the best of both worlds by adding an auxiliary fuel tank (vs totting around bottles) and I just so happen to have one of those cylindrical 4-quart oil tanks laying around AND I have the room where the battery and box use to be to mount it AND it would look cool.

Don't see why I can't plug the holes I don't need on the oil tank (just a filler hole at the top) and simply run a fuel line up to join the other fuel line with a "Y" fitting and shut-off valve. When my main tank goes empty simply close it, and open up the other.

I'm not currently running a fuel pump but i'm wondering if I can use a stock one to pull the fuel up. Could it do the work pulling fuel from the bottom of the bike up about 18" of hose?

OR there are tons of aftermarket in-line pumps like this little K&N https://www.knfilters.com/fuel_pump.aspx. but i'm a little confused about psi, gph, on/off, or even what pump would be ideal.
And of course what kind of breather/vacuum I would need for the oil tank itself.

In theory your idea should work fine, just remember to vent the aux fuel tanks so a vacuum isnt created obstructing fuel flow & or to vent pressure fuel vapor can create too.

Think I could run a simple breather fitting like this?

        Just a thought,

But this begs for an after market electric fuel pump. Searched at summit racing 7 psi, 35 ghp.

Mount your new tank. Run a large enough fuel line from your original tank to your new tank. Then run a new line to a new fuel filter then to the pump then to the carb.
No need to worry about venting the new tank, your original will do all of the venting?

        Just a thought.

I did consider that. I do most of my driving in the city. Always a gas station. So this setup was mostly for longer hauls where during my out-and-about riding I wouldn't even keep fuel in it.

Then you could ask, "then why don't you just grab a bottle/jug for those times and strap it to a sissy-bar?"

To which I would say tinkering with this auxiliary tank idea sounds like more fun, and looks cooler.
