  • 2009 Road Star cutoff

Hi,took my Road Star out for a ride today and everything was going great until I headed home and about 2 miles from the house the bike just cut off like it was out of gas but I had filled up about an hour before heading so I am curious if I picked up a little bit of trash in the gas,it started right back up and I got home just fine and then it cut off again as I was putting it back in my shop and I also thought it might be the fuel regulator maybe going bad but any help from you guys will be appreciated, thanks,Gary.

Never heard of that on a fuelie. Was any maintenance, repair or upgrades done to the bike recently?

Sounds to me like a possible faulty fuel pump

That sucks....one $$$ piece right there. Maybe get lucky and remove pump and filter and try and clean out filter (if that is even possible)....

If it's just the pump, someone on here recently replaced it for under $50. Had to disassemble the unit to get to the internal pump but it didn't sound like too bad a job.

Well while trying to trouble shoot and narrow the problem, add some fuel system/injector cleaner to your gas.. Seafoam is good.. it might help get you out of the woods this time.

You could’ve gotten a bad batch of gas that had water in it, especially if you got it at a station you don’t usually go to. I’ve had that happen in small towns.

If it’s water in the fuel and you have a clear fuel filter, you should be able to see the water in the bottom corner of the filter.

There are a few products that will “dry” out water from a tank, but I would just get rid of it, or ride it empty until you can refill at a reputable station.

By the way, if you put your petcock on reserve and attach some fuel line to drain it into a container, you should be getting able to get most of the water out of the bottom of the tank right away.

              It's a 09 FI bike. I don't think they have a petcock.

davej is correct. '08+ are fuel injected and everything is internal to the tank. Just metal lines to attach the pressurized line and return line to.

Hi,thanks for the answers about this and all of your input and I have thought about all these possibilities and this bike has never given me any issues except for a faulty Headlight bulb a while back but since it started cutting off after filling up at a station that I have not been to for a while I will start there first by draining the gas and checking all the filters, thanks.

Sounds like a good place to start. Add a heavy dose of techron plus injector cleaner to the fuel or seafoam.

Maybe also check for vacuum building up in the tank. Take the tank cap off when that happens.. does it get better?

Yes, and if that makes a difference then make sure the two rollover valves are free and clear as well as the vent at the lower right front of the fuel tank.

On my carb bikes I always got rid of rollover valves. Would it be okay to blow these out with compressed air or is that too aggressive on the fuel injected bikes?

I might have forgotten to mention that my Road Star is a fuel injected model if this makes a difference to any answers to my original question but I have taken the tank off and drained the gas out and am going to pull the fuel pump to see what it looks like but I do think I got some bad gas since it only started acting up after I put gas in it on Monday, thanks again,Gary.

I would think that bad gas wouldn't allow to restart. When it stalled it still would have the bad gas in the line and injector that made it stall in the first place. letting it set for a while wouldn't change that fact at all.

I guess we're all assuming that you did not get water in the kill switch you're not riding in the rain your battery cables are tight and all the ignition fuses are good let me check the starter solenoid to make sure it's not melted. When you say it cut out it just cut out completely no sputtering if so I'm with Dave on possible fuel pump fuel injected bikes are completely reliant on the fuel pump. Bad gas will make it run like s*** but it would still run. How is the inside of your fuel tank what state do you live in. Fuel tanks can get rusty nasty full of crud and obstruct fuel flow. And many of the dry States you don't have to worry about rust and side stand has kill switch

Hi,I'm back again and sorry not to get back for a few days but I started up my road star yesterday and all seems good about new gas but now it is leaking around the fuel pump and I will say that I took the pump to check the gasket, it looked good so I put everything back together because the gasket looked good but maybe I needed to get a new one or is there a way to seal it with something but I know not to use RTV but thought maybe you guys know of something???,thanks.

I have used permatex copper gasket spray on a lot of projects and it worked great because it is sticky and stays soft. It's really intended for hotter surfaces but I don't know why it wouldn't work on the fuel pump gasket.

I didn't read the whole thread but if it does it again check the battery, Battery starts to go tits up it does things like you described.

Back again, I thought for sure that I had my bike shutting off problem solved because after I drained what I thought was watery gas and for the last few days even though I haven't taken it for a ride I have been letting it run for a while to see what happens and until tonight no trouble and then it did it again,so any suggestions are appreciated, fuel injection roadstar.

How long was it running? As an FYI, the fuel injected bike can't sit and idle for more than about 20 minutes. It's programmed into the ECU and will shut down. There is a blurb about it in the service manual (and maybe the owners manual).
