Damn Barons pilot screw!

Went for a ride to the store bike started backfiring so I pulled over. Found out my $40 adjustable barons pilot screw fell out! Got it started and rode it back home maybe 2 miles. The only thing I could find was the spring. Any chance I did any damage to anything? The dealership up the road has the screw kit, will get it tomorrow.

Mine fell out also...sure runs like shit without it lol. Shouldn't be any damage

Probably no damage. How many turns out did you have it adjusted? I would use a stock pms screw adjusted 2 1/2 turns out and never touch it again unless you ride in colder weather and then maybe turn it out another 1/4 or so turn out for cold weather riding. I would also stretch the spring just a smidge to put more tension on the screw to hold it in place.

How was your bike running before it fell out? Just curious - Druegeme was just having issues getting his Barons PMS to run right.

Mine was running fine at what I thought was 2 1/2 out. The last time I was messing with it, I found that the heater plug was slightly rubbing against it. I've heard of them falling out before but after I could see that plug was pushing on the adjuster I figured that would help holt it in? Guess I was wrong! I'm definitely going back to the factory setup and set it at two and a half and forget it!

Yeah I won't be using adjustable anymore....for 90+% of all setups jet accordingly and put 2.5 to 2.75 out and he done with it

Bike had been running good. Yesterday I had one backfire turning into my neighborhood. Got on to ride today and made it about 2 miles and starting backfiring bad. Then shutoff. I started and had to keep turning the throttle and stay out of the pilot jet circuit. Made it home and all that was left was the spring. It got stuck under the idle adjuster.
I'm picking up a replacement screw set comes with the washer the o-ring and the spring and screw and I'm sticking with that from now on. 2 1/2 out on my bike has been fine for 4 years!
$12.00 for the parts. Cheapest repair I've done so far! Probably cost me more in gas to drive to Charlotte, then the part cost.

I found the Baron screw useless. It was pretty loose in the thread I noticed and I could not lean it out even with the screw all the way in.

Instead I put the stock screw back in and carried a drill extension bit with a small flathead bit in my pocket. Went for a really long ride today, from San Jose to Yosemite and back. Stopped a couple of times in the morning and dialed it in with the extension bit, runs perfect now I got 45mpg and not a single backfire. .

Dont know how many turns but I dont care. Runs good smells good.

What you can do is where the pilot screw goes in is to cover half that hole with silastic, this way the pilot screw can not get out on it's own, you can still play with it if you want

OK , HERE'S my problem . I can adjust this baron's pilot adjuster to any setting , including completely closed , and there is NO CHANGE ! Fast idle , Slow idle , even shut it off and I get backfire , including some mild , what seems to be missing throughout . I have no leaking at intake manifold , Heads or Carb. I pull the ( choke ) out all the way and hit the starter , this motor Fires immediately and can push choke halfway in at about 3-5 minutes . Shut choke off in 10 minutes most . Got idle set as close to 925-50 as I can guess , Tach is screwed . Where should I start in fixing this Rough idle and running RPM's ? I have sprayed carb. cleaner Through every circuit and blown air through also . I have 170 main jet and 37.5 pilot , with main needle set in fourth groove , nylon and metal washers under the clip . Same as I have done all my 1600's and 1700's . I'm running BUB JUG HUGGER exhaust with a 6" round K&N air filter . NO LEAKS ANYWHERE FOUND . HELP !

Put the stock PMS back in to eliminate the Barons screw as the culprit or find the Barons screw culprit.

If you have a multimeter to measure ohms resistaance I would also recommend to check the TPS per manual. Its really a quick check and if its out of whack it can cause havoc. Its a very quick adjustment too if needed. but if its in spec dont touch it.

Well, installed new OEM pilot screw kit. Set it at 2 3/4 turns out running great! That is where the highest idle was. I would advise to save your money and pass on the Baron's adjustable pilot screw!

what size is the PMS jet on this bike, perhaps its made ONLY FOR THE 35 STOCK OEM MIKUNI. daveJ , you made a comment a short while backk, regarding adjusting the PMS with a larger JET?? did not act the same, was that using the Baron's PMS needle?

I have a 40 pilot jet in my bike. Brian you might be on to something, they may have made that one to fit just the stock pilot.

After reading the article that roadie supplied , I think that if the pilot screw is not opening and closing that hole correctly , then all we get is uncontrolled idle speed . Am I in the ballpark here ?

But that still doesn't give a reason for why they fall out unless they should provide a different spring with the new pilot scre

well the stock screw works with both the 35 and 40 pilot jet. As I said in the other thread the shape of the tip is slightly different.

I would recommend using the stock and something like in the pic.

i always stretch the sprang to make it a tighter deal. I emailed BARONS , with the question, lets see what they say............ if it falls out, its cuz its heavier, and has end mass, and oscillates , thats why i stretch the spring.

here is what i was told , ok, theyre not gonna say it wont work , will they, they would have have to tested each PMS jet size to say it would actually work? deliver correct amount of fuel , it does not atomize at that point?


Yes it will work, depending on your size pilot jet will depend on the setting of turns.

To be more blunt, mine didnt work with a 40 size pilot jet. The OEM screw works with both the stock 35 and the 40 pilot.

Had that screw on my old roadie for 10 years and it never fell out!
I agree with brianmac it’s the weight/oscillation factor
