  • Carb issues

A friend of mine did some carb work for me. It's still running Rich, but now it does this after a long ride. Anyone know what is causing this?

Someone else will give you a proper answer soon. But I can’t resist. You will have to contact shores because I believe you have a fault with your cappachino dispenser, possibly because it’s on the wrong side of bike.. (inside joke, correct answer should be coming soon)

What kind of carb work did he do? Rejet? Change the float level? More details of the work he did and the reason for the work would greatly help. There will be a bunch that will tell you to remove your fuel pump to resolve the issue but I'd like to find the problem for the issue and correct it.

Looks like you need to add more water to your coffee maker.

I asked him to tune me up, replaced intake, installed Baron Jets and new plugs. Runs better than ever except for that issue when I shut down.

What year of bike, and what hose is connected to the back side of your stock air box at that location? I’m pretty sure the hose that connects there, comes from the crankvent on the top of the rear rocker.

It's an 03, I took my bike to him because I know nothing about carbs. So I have no idea what hose connects to that area.

Does what is coming out there smell like gas, or engine oil. That could be condensate cooking off, which is normal, and should be wet and oily not gas smelling.

I didn't smell it, but my friend said it smelled like gas with an oily texture.

On the 1600’s, the crankvent line connects at that location on the back of the air box. The bowl vent simply terminates at a metal fitting on the back of the box. It doesn’t enter the air box.
That looks to me like simple water vapor and condensate, which is typical on a hot motor.

Sorry about the year of bike question, you filled out your profile it just took me an extra click to get there.

Is there no way to stop it then? It didn't do it before.

Are you sure. I’m only asking because you can’t see it normally. On the stock set up, the crankvent line vents to the inside of the filter itself. You can’t see it with the stock filter element in place.
A lot of us have relocated the crankvent line down below the bike in most cases with a small filter on the end so it can breath.
Both of my bikes have it rerouted up under the tank to a filter attached to the ignition housing.

If........the bowl vent got connected there instead, it wouldn’t be oily. It would be gas and gas fumes.

Ok, thanks for the information. I'll take that to my friend and see what we can do. It may have done it before, but it never made that noise. Thanks again.

If you choose to relocate the line, don’t forget to plug the hole in the back of the air box.
The vent is designed so the carb sucks the hot oily vapor and blowby from the crankcase, and combust it.
It tends to trash the air filter prematurely and adds hot oily air to the intake where cool and fresh is much nicer. That’s why it gets relocated.

Looks like (Carb Puke) the vent from the top left of the carb has been routed to where the crank vent would be. Relocate that vent hose to somewhere under the bike. Find the crank vent and connect a crank vent filter to the end of it and mount where ever you like. Like this one.

supposed to be the crankcase vent but looks like someone got things mixed up a bit. Even though things got mixed up gas shouldn't be coming out. If it isn't gas and is connected correctly I would check for a pinched crankcase vent hose. That would allow pressure to build up inside the motor and release the pressure over a short bit of time after the motor is shut off. Also if it is the crankcase vent I would remove it from the back of the airbox and do the vent mad. Having the vent to the back of the box makes a gooey oily mess inside the head on top of the intake valves.

That doesn't look or sound very pleasant. I do think that some hoses got crossed. If you can get some pictures of the hose running to the back of that hole it would be helpful.

Is this the filter I need or was that just an example? I'll order it if that's the one.

Anything like that. You can get them with a hose barb, and also a small bracket attached so you can mount them somewhere, instead of just letting them terminate below the bike.
