  • Carburetor Slide getting

My 06 rs1700 is having issues with the carb slide getting stuck up, so it forces the bike into a lean scenario at low throttle. The bike actually wants to die at anything less than half throttle when it happens. It feels like occasionally the spring or something on the top end of the slide gets jammed up because when I move it by hand it moves freely then occasionally jams and won't go all the way up but also won't come back down. Has anyone had any issues with something similar happening?

Have you removed the slide for inspection?…. I found the slide on my buddies roadstar had a bit of a rough spot on it…. Not sure what caused it (2001 model)

i took some 600 wet/dry sandpaper and smoothed it out. It didnt take but a couple of minutes to get it corrected. The slide moves very freely now in the carb from bottom to top of the slot…

Yeah I'm guessing you've got a rough spot or a little crud buildup in the slide chamber. Pull it out, clean it up, put it back in. Something's binding in there a bit. Some carb cleaner (Seafoam fuel additive) may even clean it up. The guys here recommend three tanks full with serious issues, and perhaps once a year after that. Something's gummed up. Have you run any cleaner through it?

Putting a cleaner in the fuel won't help free up the slide. Pull it out and clean it up with sandpaper or steel wool. When working proper the slide with remain open about an inch in it's lowest position. When you have it out inspect the diaphragm for any holes rips or debris in that vacuum chamber that may be hanging it up

Thank you for your replies, I have run seafoam through it, recently cleaned the carb and entire fuel system because I put 87 in it trying to save a few bucks and it went bad after sitting for a week. Turns out I didn't have the needle jet retainer all the way seated and it was wobbling and binding on the spring. Put it in all the way and haven't had the problem since. Big derp moment

The bike is suppose to use 87 (Regular) gas, premium fuel is only needed on engines with high compression. A Roadstar does not have a high compression engine so don't waste you money on high octane fuel.

My 02 with full exhaust and jetting likes 89 better.

In what way? If you live in a state that has very high temps I can see using 89 to help prevent spark knock but other than that it is never needed. The owners manual even has it listed

I do get valve knocking with 87. Gas is getting worse. Less power and more junk in it. Gas from the 80s is better than gas now. Yet we pay more for it.

"valve knocking". From 2 point lower octane gas?

I run 91 because it's the only grade w/o ethanol here, and the ethanol is what made my gas go bad in a week.

Ethanol does kill sending unit for fuel gauge... Been there

what makes you think that ethanol will go bad in a week? No way possible. Every part in your fuel system and engine is engineered to perform with the ethanol fuel. Does it crud up a little different than non ethanol??? Yes it does but the bike and any other vehicle you can buy is engineered to use it.

Some have said that Techron Concentrate Plus protects sending units.

Ethanol is the worst. It draws moisture into the gas along with other problems but hey as long as the corn farmers get paid so what. Insert sarcasm into that comment. Such bullshit we don’t have the option for non ethanol where I live

I just went through a carb and noticed what looked like casting flash on fcireved side of slide... 600 Grit and some brake cleaner and all better

If you do use steel wool use 0000 with a little bit of oil I wouldn't use carb cleaner on the plastic. To my knowledge ethanol doesn't draw water into the gas. Moisture gets inside of your tank on cool Downs if you live in a humid state it can be a lot of water. Ethanol fuel actually absorbs more water and brings it in for combustion then rec fuel. With conventional gasoline the water will sit below the fuel. The difference though is very small. If you're going to run your bike regular all year ethanol is just fine, but if you're going to use it irrregularly like your weed eater I would use rec fuel and stabilizer. Not because rec fuel is any better, but I believe that it has a slightly longer shelf life than ethanol. By the way any of you guys ever noticed that old ethanol smells like skankyn Bourbon
