  • float bowl level again

    Hello
I do not have a fuel pump.
What should the fuel level be?
    I have xv1600 99r.

Checking the Yamaha way, with a tube on the bowl drain nipple, and looped up along a corner on the manifold side of the carb(not the air box side. It’s the side facing the motor).
The bike needs to be upright, not leaning over on the side stand.
Loosen the drain screw until the tube fills with fuel.
The level should be 4 to 5mm above the bowl to carb mating surface.
It doesn’t hurt to start the bike while doing this. The level should stay at the same spot except for a slight variation from vibration.

Make sure the petcock is open when checking.

What Duke posted, is on the air box side. Due to the way the bottom flange slopes, it's significantly higher in relation to the bowl and carb mating surface at the front, then the 4 to 5mm checked at the back per Yamaha in relation to the bowl to carb mating surface. I suspect this is probably an accurate way to check in an easier location, based on his second photo.
I've never done it this way, but I probably will in the future. I still prefer the Odo method, but its gone by the wayside and is subject to interpretation error. Checking at the front, using the casting bar referenced will probably have you a bit shy of the 4 to 5mm mark, which is about even with the top of the casting where the bowl screws thread in on the back corner(IIRC) The level based on the side pic would be about 2ish mm just from the pic.

Running pumpless, a bit higher then the line in the front view pic would be better. The stock bowl is small as far as volume goes since it was designed for use with a fuel pump. Every little bit helps.

Good pics by the way. :^)

Don't know what the pumpless requirement is, but to set the fuel level in the float bowl to 5mm above the inner rear mating surface, the best way I've found is to use the method in the photo below. This is with the float *lightly* seated. Measure 5.25mm from the top of the float seam to the mating surface of the carb.

This is done with the carb upside down and sitting on a table. I measured using the butt end of a digital caliper on the side opposite of the idle knob. This saves you from having to remove the idle knob and reset it later.

Heres a detailed thread from the archive if you feel like reading it: https://wayback.archive-it.org/10073.../limitstart,0/

Duke, great idea, that makes it way easier to measure fuel level in the float bowl. FYI the top of the flange is 5mm.

            So based on that...

It looks like 5mm above the rear inner mating surface of the carb is actually even with the bottom of the inlet:

The carb does not care how it gets its fuel. It just wants the float bowl full.
I set mine with Doc_V's method and my bike runs perfect. Friday July 5th 2019

The original stock setting for the first couple of years(99–>?) was even with the bowl to carb mating surface. Yamaha came out with an update distributed to the dealers( 00 or 01.. which Texasscott brought to light), where Yamaha raised it to the 4 to 5mm setting. It became the standard for all years.
North of 5mm is not a good thing. I think they probably work fine down to 2 or 3.
Apparently Yamaha had some issues at even. I don’t remember any post about it on the old Forum when I first joined. I’ve never tried running it that low. When I bought my first Roadie, Scott’s update info was in the search’s I did, as well as Odo’s method. I set mine accordingly. There were plenty of members in the early years of the Forum, who simply ditched the pump and did nothing else.

Never seen it recommended to set at less than 5mm. Same on all carbed Stars. I have had to reset the float levels for folks that tried & screwed it up

I also only use the clear tube method to check the level.

Check the '99 (original) shop manual Tim. It had the level at 2-3 mm's below the bowl seam. Yamaha issued the Tech update in 2000. I was surprised that nobody on the RSR forum caught it even those working for a dealership. I caught it a few years back reading the tech update manuals while working at the dealership here.

Interesting discussions on fuel levels. It's great to have all of the inputs.
I've been running the fuel level at the upper casting flange since 2002 and 45k miles. In 2013 I replaced the float needle and seat with the 3mm Grizzle 660 float valve and went pumpless using this float setting. So far, so good, and I'm getting a average of 52 mpg, keeping it under 70 mph. If riding 2up and fuel is down to the last 1/2 gallon, I have to back off the speed to under 60 mph or it starts to starve for fuel.
              Ride SAFE.
              Duke.

Oh, by the way, I'm running a 32 tooth front sprocket and a 65 rear sprocket.

If you're getting 52mpg and happy with performance you're definitely *way* ahead of the game.

I've got mine tuned for maximum performance and get around 35-38mpg, but then I ride very aggressively, frequently scraping floorboards and hitting WOT as I exit the turns of twisty mountain roads.

The truth is, these carbs are very forgiving and have wide operating ranges when it comes to settings. I'd say unless someone is dissatisfied with the performance or the bike is running badly, it's best to leave it be. ...As always YMMV.
