  • Bike wont start after Carb rebuild kit?

I rebuilt the carb and its getting fuel, it turns over but wont start. I went back over it and triple checked all connection hoses and wiring. I have the fuel mix screw set at 3 1/2 turns out. This seems to be the factory setting from what I can find. I have not played around with the Pilot air adjustment, but it sounds like it should be 1 1/2 turns out from online searches. I was going to check that setting next.

I am way out of my wheel house on this
Any and all suggestion's would be great.

    Thanks,
    Chris

What screw are you calling the fuel mix screw? and what screw are you calling pilot air adjustment?

This is the screw that I set at 3 1/2 turns out.

I am still tying to figure out the air adjustment location?

You guys will need to forgive me. I am really new at all of this from a mechanical stand point.

the screw you are adjusting is the only adjustment. It is the air/fuel adjustment. turning it out adds fuel to richen the primary circuit it does not add air on the stock carb. Air is added with a fixed size air jet and you don't want to mess with it.

Is that "air" jet at the mouth of the carb, called "Air Pilot Jet"? I plugged mine when adding a PCP valve to the crankvent hose coming out of the rear cylinder head. I have cleaned it and left it there (I cant find that particular jet anywhere) but for the life of me I can't figure out why this PCP valve required the elimination of the Air Pilot Jet!

Who told you that you had to plug the air jet? I think you misunderstood something because that is totally wrong. Unplug it. The only thing that gets plugged is the hole in the back of the airbox that the vent hose used to plug into

I guess its time to take it into a shop and have a professional get this thing running. Thanks for the help and advice.

Don't use the "S" word around here! They are not necessarily professionals. Just hang in with advice from this forum and you can do it on your own. More knowledge here than any shop can imagine.

I agree, it took me a while but I got my bike running again and better than ever!

You all give me some things to try, I would much rather get it running on my own for sure. I put myself in a 10 min TO. But I did take a Beer with me! ; )

I assume the carb gurus here told you what jets to put in the carb. And another thing, don't use the "M" word either! Those are the aliens that work at that "S" place!

If anyone knows what Jets I should be using, please let me know. I had just bought a factory rebuild kit for that carb. If anyone has a rebuild kit link with what I need that would be great.

will it start with a short spray of starting fluid? If not pull at least 1 spark plug from each cylinder to see if they are wet. If they are clean them with starting fluid then dry the plug with a torch if you have one. then try to start the bike. I also see in your profile you have aftermarket exhaust. Do you also have a K/N style air filter? When you rebuilt the carb did you have a multi groove needle or a single groove needle? Did you reinstall the plastic spacer on the needle under the clip?

I thought the pilot needle was behind the plug that hasn’t been removed in the photo.

The plug you are referring to is plugging holes from manufacturing. The hole he is showing also has a plug in it from the factory.

Yes, I have a KN filter system on it. It will kick over when you hit it with starter fluid. I replaced all the plugs with iridium spark plugs for that bike and also installed 2 new Dyna Coil packs on it. I am getting good spark and fuel to each cylinder head.

I am not sure about the needle or the spacer. would need to take it out and tear it back down. I just as well should buy the proper carb kit and just replace all the parts just to make sure I have all the proper jets and needle setup.

any guidance on the proper kit would be great.

If it fires with starting fluid then you are not getting fuel to the engine. maybe the float is stuck closed and not allowing fuel into the fuel bowl.

How can i tell if the float is sticking after i take it apart. When i did the rebuild on it, it seems that the float was moving properly and the float needle was moving freely in its position.

I did replace the float needle. but not the float itself. it was in good condition. I guess another carb break down is in order.

you are gonna have to go back in. When you do let us know what jet sizes you have and what type of needle is in it, whether it is a multi groove needle or single grove needle.

Just another thought to confirm if you have fuel in the fuel bowl you should be able to look into the mouth of the carb and twist the throttle and see fuel squirting from the brass tube in the mouth of the carb. If fuel is squirting then you have fuel in the fuel bowl. That would mean that there is another issue related to fuel. Also are you sure the fuel pump is coming on? When you turn on the key you should here it clicking for a few seconds until it pressurizes the system. if it keeps clicking and don't shut off then there is a fuel supply issue like out of gas or gas valve not turned on. That has happened to a few members in the past.

                            Dave,
Yes I am getting fuel squirting into the carb from the brass tube. And i can hear the fuel pump come on and prime the system and then turn off, it does not continue running. I have the side panel off that covers the fuel filter and can see fuel moving thru the filter. Gas valve is on and has about a gallon and a half of gas in the tank.

I had drained the tank of gas thinking the gas may have gone bad in it. I also drained all the lines and blew all the gas out of the carb. And then replaced it with new gas.
