  • Need carb

So I'm looking to get a carb for my 99 1600. Anyone have one for sale in good shape or know where I can buy one? Don't need a 600$ high performance carb, just wantg to get my bike ruining again. Any help will be appreciated

Why do you think you need another carburetor?

He's offering help. It just sounds like a question. His question was the first thing that came to my mind, as well.

      So.....

"Why do you think you need annother carb?" What's the one you have now doing(or not), that thinks you need a different one?

Float needle is definitely sticking for one, I could do a rebuild kit but I don' have the time let alone the tools any more (thank you Irma for that one) seems it' just be easier to buy one and put it on than the hassle of redbuilding

There really is no kit, per say. The orings are reuseable, if they're not damaged. If the insides are gummed up a bit, but the bike will still run, just not well. then dump 12 to 16 ounces of Seafoam or Marvel Mystery oil in the next full tank of gas, and ride it. See if that helps.

Any used carburetor you run across is going to require a going over just like what you could do to your own and end up good for way less money. Even IF such a thing as a new carburetor existed and you were willing to throw nearly 400 bucks at it, it would STILL have to have the float level verified and the PMS screw tuned in, just like any used carb. 25 extra minutes beyond removal and less than 40 bucks and you can be running like a top.

You should fill out your profile so we can tell what bike you have and maybe where you live. There might be someone in the area that could help get things going for you. Alot of us look at profiles for info on a members bike along with other info

I would seriously consider the advice above. If none of that works out, you can get a new HSR42 from SS Custom Cycles, all setup and ready to install for $325.

Where in NY are you heading? There are a number of people there that we could point you towards if need be.

If your interested, I could rebuild your carburetor or set up one I have at a fair price. Either way you go, I'd need your TPS so I could set it for the right settings.

Appreciate all the responses guys, just got off duty today to find out my bud had come over, left the petcock valve open on my bike after sitting on it messing around, float needle definitely stuck so filled the whole engine up with gas and flooded everything out, so the real tricky part here is to get a jack under it to drain the now diluted oil...problem is my bike sits maybe 2 inches off the ground which presents a problem...gotta love drunk friends haha. Bright side at least the internals will be spotless

Had you been using the bike at all? Just being careful to shut the petcock off when it wasn’t running?
Check the Tech Articles above for the various carb helps, as well as the one about changing your needle and seat and going pumpless. If you’re still running the pump, just skip the pumpless part and study the pics and directions. Buy an OEM needle and seat, and replace it.

If the needle and seat just stuck open out of the blue, then it’s more then likely varnish and crud in the bowl causing it. This is why Seafoam, Techron, or Marvel Mystery Oil are a good idea. Simply add one of them to your fuel on a somewhat regular basis, based on the recommendations on the can.
I also shut my petcock off, and let the the carb use up the fuel in the bowl for about 30 or 45 seconds before turning the key off. This lets the needle drop out of the seat to prevent them being stuck closed or open.

I am realizing this is what I probably need to do. The bike I just bought seems to be flooded when I go to start her up the next day UNLESS I turn off the petcock when I park her. I'm inclined to venture into the terrifying waters of a carb disassembly for a deep cleaning and partial rebuild (never worked on a carb before). I recently saw a great and clear how-to video by James Adams on YouTube. In the meantime, I'm going to add SeaFoam or Mystery Oil. Either one more highly recommended than the other in your opinion?

Either of those two(MMO or Seafoam)will work. There’s a really good chance it may involve the needle and seat though. The bike runs fine other then a flooding on start if the petcock isn’t closed while the bike is idle, is a good indicator the needle and seat isn’t sealing properly.
Give the fuel treatment a go. It’s not a waste of money regardless.

Oh, one more thing. I found in the history records for this bike, the original owner at one point had let the bike sit for 18 months (due to military service it seems) and so the carb and lines were gummed up. They apparently did the work (not sure how thorough) before selling it to the 2nd owner some years ago, from whom I just bought the bike. Other than that, the bike seems to run pretty well. I don't know RSs though, but get the feeling she's not 100%. Intake seems a little laggy, but I'll know after I resurrect the air filter tomorrow which has not been cleaned or changed, possibly ever in its 12 year history
