  • Rear cylinder breather tubes

    Can someone explain what they do, how they do it, and what the plusses and minus's are? I think I understand that the rear is the crankcase breather. The front runs into the carb through a filter. I have searched and searched and come up with little. The circled items. Are they vacuum or what? My 1999 is a basket case (my fault for letting her sit) and I have to many issues to know which is the worse at the moment. Click image for larger version

    The rear one is connected to the oil tank. Leave it in place. the front one vents to the back side of the carburetor air intake and most people disconnect it from the back of the intake and attach it to a small universal filter that they position somewhere else on the bike. This keeps oil fumes from going into the carburetor and making a mess of the filter. If you do this be sure you plug the hole that you left in the back of the intake.

      Ok, thanks!! Spent all day trying to find something definite. I was wondering if that was what they were. Figured I better check tho. I couldnt figure out whether the one into the carb was a vacuum or vent. I will go ahead and stick a small filter on it and plug the carb hole.

        I ran the crankcase vent with new 3/8 fuel hose to an Emgo filter and mounted to bottom bolt where stock air box attaches... Works good and adds chrome!

          I put my small air filter for that vent in the main air filter and it still leaked oil all over
          It's not that life is so short, it's just that you're dead for so long.---unknown.

            The trick is to run a breather tube up hill from the head, to the ignition key area, then back down to the air box with the largest tube you can use. .
            I use a 3/8" x 3" tube from the head, then step up to a 1/2" x 4", then back to 3/8" tube while it's going up hill towards the ignition key area. Doing this allows oil to separate from the breather air and runs back to the head.
            I have found that you get very, very little oil coming to the air box this way.

              Never heard of anyone doing it that way. I ran the tube up underneath the gas tank, put a filter on it, and blocked off the back of the air box. No oil mist ever. What is the advantage of running a tube back down to the air box?

                You can't tell me there isn't any mist at all.
                When a engine is running, is has to breathe to release the blow-by and you will get a little mist.

              The advantage is no possibility of a fume smell when you are stopped at a traffic light, etc. I ran mine to the ignition area also with a small filter and can occasionally smell fumes. Duke is so schmart!

                Gotcha. I prefer no oil coming out of the filter, even if it is "very little".
