  • Ran out of fuel at 80 miles.

    What are y'all thoughts? 2008 fuel injected Roadstar, 60,000 miles. So the weirdest damn thing happened today on a ride. I ran out of gas after 80 miles on a full tank. Luckily a rider in the group rode 1 mile to his house in Centralia to bring me 5 gallons of fuel. It ran fine on the way home but the fuel gauge an idiot light kept freaking out. I filled up two days ago after a 42 mile per gallon ride and when I started the bike the fuel idiot light came on. I treated the fuel with marvel mystery oil also at that time. This morning the idiot light came on again and it showed empty. I looked in the tank and had a full tank so I figured no big deal I can ride without a fuel gauge. So after about 80 miles it started farting and I thought maybe there was water in the fuel. On the way home the fuel gauge kept wigging out and the idiot light kept going on and off. As soon as I got into town I filled it up and treated the fuel with techron and rode it for about 5 miles and everything was normal. Got about 49 miles to the gallon coming home. Go figure. If the techron fixed it, I'm buying stock.

    Have you had the tank off recently? Maybe check if wiring is binding. Just last week had an issue with right turn signal driving light. Thought it was the bulb so changed it out...nothing. Tested both bulbs and were good. Checked connections all secure. Then started testing for continuity and 1 wire was open. Found 1 wire between the bucket and light bar broke internally. Tore everything apart and fixed it. Hope it is something simple. JC

      I haven't done anything to the bike lately other than put in a new Barnett clutch conversion and change the fluids. I didn't disconnect any wires or remove anything other than the clutch cover. Ran great for two long trips last week. The fuel gauge issue seems to be separate from the fuel consumption issue. I'm wondering if I got something wet when I washed it 2 days ago.

        42 mpg down to around 18 mpg. was your riding conditions about the same or were you riding uphill at wot against the wind.

          Me too. I thought he must have been having alot of fun to go all the way down to 18 mpg.lol

        Same conditions, even slower in a larger group. I’ve ridden that area many times and usually on one tank of fuel to get there and home. Ran out about the mid point today.

          that is a weird thing to happen. it had to be stinking like fuel for anyone riding behind you. must have been some sort of intermittent sensor issue.

            Hmmm, not sure, were you able to put 4 1/2 gal in it?
            It's not that life is so short, it's just that you're dead for so long.---unknown.

              Maybe some bad fuel???? You never know how good the fuel is nowadays.
              Fuel is pumped thru pipelines to distribution tank yards, where trucks load for what ever brand, adding additives for that brand. The fuel is basically the same, except for the additives.
              I've been told that gasolines and diesels are pumped thru the same supply pipeline.
              There's a lot of ways for fuel to get contaminated.
              Steve, did you happen to notice any performance differences?

                To Mike and Duke, I put 4.75 gallons in from Garrett’s gas can and had no performance issues until it started sputtering and ran out of fuel. I don’t see how bad gas can drop you from 42mpg to 16mpg.

                          Just how much did you have to drink that day. Time to get rid of that bike it will happen again, trust me I will give you $500 for it today.

                              I'm going to have to ask more than that! Yesterday I got 34 miles to the gallon but the light and fuel gauge we're still acting up but not as much as the days before. When the fuel light was blinking, the gauge would very slowly go down after many miles. As soon as the light went off the gauge would pop back up to the actual level and then again work its way down if the light came on again.
