wiring in new horns

  • wiring in new horns

    Found a diagram for the Hella horns with a relay, pulled the stock horns off and getting ready to run all the wires, connectors and whatnot. In the stock wiring there are 2 browns and a pink wire, I'm guessing the pink is the signal wire. Will I need to do anything with the brown wires?

    Doesn’t the pink wire connect to your fuel tank so it glows!

    Pink is in fact the signal wire and brown is 12V power to the horns. Page 7-37 of the Service Manual shows this. If you don't have the Service Manual I can send you a copy if you send me your email address in the messages section on here. I have it in .pdf format on my computer but this site will not let me upload a .pdf file.

      I found the service manual and diagram last night. Should I just use the 12V wires as my power into the relay, or run a new 12V wire from the battery to the relay?

        Run a new wire from the battery thru a 20 Amp fuse to terminal 30/51 on the relay for the power. The single pink wire from the horn button will be the signal wire to terminal 86 on the relay. Terminal 87 on the relay will connect to the horns. This is how I read the schematic anyway. As davej indicates below, if the new horns don't need any more amperage than the stock horns you don't need the new relay. I'm not sure what the amp draw is for stock horns, but if the new horns require more amps you'll have to run an appropriate size wire to the new horns from the new relay.

      what hella horns are you using? If they don't need any extra amperage than the stock horns just use the stock horn wiring right to the horn. if they use more amps to power than the stock wires can handle use the stock wires to activate the relay and use a larger wire from the battery with an inline fuse to the relay to power the horns.

          They are 2x66 watt 118db horns. The stock wires seem tiny so probably just run new wires so I get the full loudness.

            That is what I would do. In fact that is what I did when I installed my WOLO badboy horn. I just use the oem wires to control the relay.
