  • Clutch, kickstand neutral switch question.

Quick question, if the the neutral, kickstand, or clutch switch were bad would that keep the engine from turning over or would it just keep the coils from producing spark? I am trying to chase down a no spark issue with little to no electrical know how. Thank you

I'm pretty certain it will keep the starter from turning the engine over. I believe even the kill switch on the right bar will also keep the starter from turning the engine over if it's not in the run position.

+ 1 sounds like you have other problems. Good luck with it, I'm no help with electrical shit.

I was afraid of that. Thank you for your answers. I’ll post when I sort it out.

Those switches keep the engine from turning over, absolutely no power, no click, no nothing.

It’ll crank with the clutch pulled in gear and the stand down, but won’t fire off.

what was the last thing you did to the bike when it stopped running. Did you have the tank off? With a little more info this group can help you get it running again. But you will need to have at least a cheap volt meter to do some testing.

I replaced the manifold, cleaned the carb, new seat and needle (mikuni), new enriched cover and diaphragm. When I finished all that the bike started right up, I let it warm up, adjusted the idle and then turned it off with the switch, the key remained on. When I went to restart it, it just cranked and wouldn’t fire over. I gave it full throttle, it fired for a split second then nothing. Battery is 12.6 sitting there and around 11.5 while cranking. I pulled a plug a plug wire from each jug and cranked it while holding the plug to the head and see no spark. The previous owner unplugged the kickstand switch for some reason. I can see gas from the accelerator pump when twisting the throttle and as the engine turns I see the gas coming up from the needle.

are the plugs wet with fuel? or black with carbon?

Wet with fuel, and I can smell the fuel as crank it over.

They won't spark if they are wet with fuel. Spray them with starting fluid and dry them with a propane torch if you have one. reinstall them and it will start. When it does start (and it will) then we have to figure out why they got wet in the first place. Do you twist the throttle before trying to start it? If so stop doing that, it could be the reason for the wet plugs. If you don't have a way to clean and dry the plugs you will need new spark plugs. In fact whith the plugs removed turn over the engine for a few seconds to clear out any residual fuel in the cylinders. When starting pull the choke out all the way, (do not twist the throttle) start it, when the engine stumbles after 10-15 seconds with the choke pulled out all the way push the choke in until the engine smooths out.

Ok, I will get the plugs out and try that. I will keep everyone updated and thank you for the information.

You might get away with doing just the 2 outside plugs that are easy to get to. If it starts just doing the 2 outside plugs the other 2 should clean themselves as it runs and warms up. That will just keep you from removing the tank. If you don't mind removing the tank, by all means clean all 4 plugs.

I cleaned the plugs and lightly sanded them, regapped and reinstalled. No luck. I ordered new ones, they are cheap enough just to rule it out.

Did you look for spark on the electrodes before installing them?

You do not need to remove spark plugs from the engine to see if they have spark.

Just attach a timing light to the plug wire and look at the timing light.
If there is not timing light flash then it is not firing. Saves time.

put a Phillips screwdriver inside the sparkplug cap and hold it about 1/16 inch away from the side of the engine and crank it to see if it sparks. Also did you do anything down by the left side clutch cover? There is a plug down there with wire coming out of the clutch cover that if you have a bad connection at that plug you won't get spark. also if you have braided throttle cables and they are laying across the coil under the tank it could be grounding out the coils.
I also had a similar situation 1 time and I charged the battery and everything was OK. It had enough voltage to crank the engine but not enough to crank and start(spark) the electronic ignition has a required min voltage to make things happen. I'm not sure what that magic voltage number is but there is a number.

See post 15.1 above to save time.
No need to remove the spark plug from the engine.

Tried the screwdriver trick no spark. Looked at the plug while cranking, no spark while holding against the head. I printed out the service manual electrical section and am going to start trouble shooting. Before I do that I’ll check voltage again on the battery. It was 13.8 on the trickle charger and 11.5 or so while cranking. The bike was used very little from the previous owner. 300 miles in 6 years so it did a lot of Idling in the garage

don't hold the screwdriver against the head, if it is touching the head it won't spark. It has to have a small gap between the screwdriver and the head

I think this is the guy that found a broken wire near the ignition box.
