  • Hard/Slow cranking issue?

    Hey guys, this is showing as my first post, but I've been a member here for years. For whatever reason, my account was gone so I made a new one.

    Anyway, I've got a 2000 Roadstar that has a hard/slow cranking issue. I've done pretty much everything I can to remedy it, so I'm open to suggestions here:

    -Replaced the starter with a Rick's Electrics Heavy Duty starter.
    -Replaced the starter solenoid with a cheap Chinese knock off until the Yamaha OEM solenoid comes in.
    -Jumped the solenoid with 4ga wire to verify that the cheap Chinese solenoid was not the issue, it was not.
    -Replaced the battery with a new 310 CCA battery (Advance Auto brand, been using them for a decade in both my Roadstars with no issues, combined over 100k on the bikes).
    -Verified that the battery was making 310 CCA, it was making 315 CCA.
    -Replaced both starter wires, starter to solenoid and solenoid to battery, as well as main ground, with 4ga automotive wire.
    -Verified that the Decompression solenoid was actuating, it is.

    My next step is to remove the right side cover and make sure the little decompression thingy is working. It's my prime suspect ATM. Seems that the spoon that the actuator presses on is just flopping around, doesn't seem to care if it's tilted outboard or inboard, no difference in cranking.

    Anything else I'm missing here?

    Unless you are in a hot climate, don’t use 20-50 oil...use 10-40. That made a big difference with my 2008 fuelie.

      My guess is that the "Ricks" starter is the issue. You say you have 2 R*'s,as easy as it it to remove a starter try swapping them between the 2 bikes. If it fixes the issue then you know it is a starter issue. If it don't fix it there is no need to swap it back but it will be an easy diagnosis tool.

        Unfortunately, the bikes are 2500 miles apart so that isn't an option.

          I’d definitely pull the starter and bench test it. Should spin up immediately with no load. And then pull the brush cover and look it over. Burned commutator, stuck brush, broken wire, dry bearings, etc. That starter has the tells of being weak.

            Then I'll say that if you move the spoon all the way on the decompression solenoid by hand and it don't spin like mad then it is the starter. Ricks products haven't had the best reviews around here. I have never tried any of his products and will not be anytime in the future. It wouldn't hurt to do as Bikerron said above and inspect the inside of the starter. Or bring it to a local starter rebuild shop and have them check/rebuild it.

              About that. Dave hit on something. Over time, that plunger smacking the spoon will tweak the arm of the spoon (it’s brass) where the clearance becomes excessive enough that the stroke of the plunger cannot give the arm full travel. At rest, there shouldn’t be much free play before the plunger contacts the spoon. The closer, the better.

              Members, using pliers, have been able to bend the arm of the spoon back to where it belongs.
