  • Help !! Electrical problems

    My friends o9 Roadstar 1700 Silverado, fuel Injected. Will only start and run if the starter button is held in. Shuts off as soon as the starter button is released. Tried starter, ignition and fuel pump relay, no difference, tried decompression solenoid, no difference all fuses are good, not grounded out, dealer is now leaning toward the ECU being bad. Anyone have any other ideas or suggestions, or had this type of problem and fixed it ????? Thanks for any help.

    Back up. Was this what it was doing in the first place when he started slinging parts at it or had he been doing other things and the problem popped up?

      Dumb question but I am new to bike mechanics in general, would it have this same issue present if starting in gear with the kickstand down? It’s pouring rain out here so I don’t wanna go try on my bike, thank you.

        To answer my own question above in case anyone else wondered. There is a clutch switch on our levers and the bike continues to run as long as the clutch is pulled while in gear with the kickstand down.

      Starter relay not staying pulled in. when you release the start button, it drops out.

        Starter relay is supposed to break current to the starter when you release the button. Otherwise, it’d just keep spinning.

      The bike shut off while he was riding, and would not fire up again. It would only run while the starter button was pushed. And shut off again soon as the button was released. Started doing relays after it was towed back to his garage , ended up at Yamaha dealer, and they are now leaning toward the ECU.

        Leaning? Leaning?

        What the hell kind of answer is that from a dealer tech?

        They're supposed to be able to go down a check list of possible faults before replacing the ECU. That’s the last thing that would be determined at fault after diagnosing a slew of other possibilities.

        Well sir, that's what my buddy said. They're leaning towards the ecu. Wish I could be more specific, but he said those were the dealers exact words..

          This is not the ECU.
          It has something to do with the Solenoid that controls the kickstand, fuel pump relay, and start circuit relay.
          It is officially called the starting circuit cut off relay.

          If I was the mechanic I would unplug that relay on a bike that is the same, and see if it acts the same way.

          Those mechanics do not understand that at a dealership they are the mechanics that
          are supposed to fix things properly after the owner and all the friends have failed.

            Don't let them just replace things. They need to diagnose the problem first, using a voltmeter etc, identify what's wrong and then replace components.
