  • 2005 Road Star 1700 Charging system

    Ok I went to ride the bike and it started like it had a weak or low battery. So it fired up and I drove about 2 miles to stop for gas, got gas and the battery did not have enough to start the engine.
    So I had a friend come and jump it. Got home and took the battery to Walmart and they charged it and tested it and said it was good. Brought it home and put it in the bike and my meter said 12V. Started the bike up went to 12/13V no higher. So it is not charging. What do you think it could be. Is there a write up on how to check the system out in this site and if so can someone point me to it.
    Also do i have to use OEM high dollar parts, or have after market stuff been working out. Thanks for any help.

    Check your cables and connectors to make sure the are clean and tight. That's a real common cause. But YES you absolutely need to use OE regulators. The cheap ones WILL fail. Often with in miles. Do you have any auxiliary items connected to your bike? Passing lamps, higher wattage headlight, USB charger, LED lights, stereo or amplified speakers, etc.? I believe the 05s had the updated charging system, so you should be OK, but the electrical draw adds up. USB chargers are known for drawing current even when not in use to the point they can kill you battery unless you have them wired to a switched power source that only works when the key is turned on.

      Yes, Doc, the '05 has the better charging system. I think they may have come out with that on the '04 actually, but I'm not 100% certain on that.

      Also, check the stator’s plug under the seat. They’ll get hot, start to melt, and lose connection. Resistance goes up and all those electrons have a hard time finding the regulator.

        This is a very common problem on several japanese motorcycles.
        I have seen their corroded plugs myself.

      like doc said, use oem parts. MY regulator/rectifier was putting out 18 volts which was going to fry the battery. So i bought a cheap 30 dollar part and it blew after 100 miles. So i bought an oem and am just fine. Look up on youtube and learn how to test the ohms on reg/ret and also trouble shoot the stator, just takes a minute. I also bought a voltage meter that plugs into my cig lighter socket and it runs 14.2 and i can check it anytime i leave for a ride. Its call a bull voltage gauge or something like that, works great. Also do a search on " bike not charging" here on the forums, good luck.

        Ok this has me at my wits end, can anybody show me a picture of where the stator is located on the 2005 Road, Star 1700. Yamaha dealer could not even tell me ,Youtube was useless So I have one more cover to pull off in the AM at the front right side of the engine. So if anybody knows please let me know.             The Clymers' manual covers everything you need. Must have.

          Mine’s a factory service manual I bought used, but in great shape, off eBay for 25 bucks-shipped, but it’s for an ‘08 fuelie.

            You can even check out Ronnies Microfiche website and under Yamaha motorcycles and select you year and model. All parts are shown and locations.

                  Maybe you didn’t see the comment under your pics, but I also would like to know more about the magic holding that front pulley on. I don’t even see threads sticking out to put a nut on, is the shaft broken and pulley welded on?

                    As you can see I was working on the the bike and you can see by the other pictures there are a lot of parts missing, it is all back together and that nut is back on. Now are you happy.

                      Please tell me you didn’t gut the transfer case just to see if there was a stator in there. It was listed as one of the places where it wasn’t.

                      What were you doing to pull all that out?

                    Well if you read the whole post nobody new where the stator was. so you have to look for it, Yamaha dealers didn't even know.

                      If the dealership(s) you went to or asked didn't know where the stator was located run like hell from those dealerships.

                    I did read the whole post.

                    If I didn’t have a clue as to where a charging system was on a motorcycle engine, I would have started with the easy stuff first like the headlight bucket or under the seat.

                    Could have asked here, or at least Googled it.

                      Was that 12-13V at idle? what did it read when you rev'ed the engine up? Did you check the stator for a short or the coil resistance?
