  • Starter removal

So after fucking with my wires to find out why the bike won t crank, I decided it's time to pull the starter. I disconnected the wires pulled the two bolts mounting the starter and started pulling and tuggin. After two hours.....nothin. As my only day off for a while I decided I needed to make progress. So I started taking it apart while still attached to see what the hang up is possibly. I'm definitely getting a new starter but the copper armature won t come out, I'll post a pic. it's moves back and fourth about a 1/4 of an inch and it will spin with some resistance. Any ideas why she won't budge or am I just a dummy?

Everything on this diagram from 1-10 is still on the bike, it won't budge out of the case

I would remount the case #16 to gain the ability to wiggle the entire starter and remove #4..

The armature won’t slide out, because there is a circlip (1) that holds the starter gear on the shaft.

Realize that the starter has been sitting in the same place for probably 18 years and you’ll need to use some penetrating oil back there and just wiggle, coax and pull till that crusty bond lets go.

Perhaps some gentle persuasion with a dead blow hammer might be in order.

Drumsonly2002 has the best solution. Reassemble it for better leverage to wiggle the complete starter out first.

The area circled in green is where 19 years of crud on the aluminum has built up between the starter housing and engine case and I’m sure that big o ring is harder than Chinese arithmetic. Soak it good with a penetrant and it’ll take some coaxing to get it out.

                PS

Ditch the AIS. It’s in the way.

I am or was about to take my starter out and rebuild it. Seems to turn slower than it should. So I ordered a kit without looking at what was on the bike assuming it was stock. Well it is a Ricks starter. Not sure what to do. For the price of a Ricks rebuild kit i could almost buy a new starter. Or I could get a used one on Ebay and use the rebuild kit I already have. But It should come out easy having been replaced.

Wait, and compare the brushes in the kit with what’s in the starter. Probably work. Over time, other than a commutator polishing and brushes, these starters just need a good cleaning and bearings repacked more than anything.

I went ahead and ordered a starter. Guessing it is rebuilt from Walmart of all places. 94 dollars. Will pull the Ricks off and take a look at it see if any of the kit can be used. Will have one to hang on the wall of misery just in case I need it.

also carefully inspect the brass brush holder(in the brush kit)( the brushes are attached to it with a wire , its like C shaped) inside the starter, over time the 90 degree bends crack from the factory, and get weaker, and carry less current. i replaced mine with new OEM, and they failed a tear later. so i replaced with after market (with a slight mod). i got almost a year out of the OEM, but IM on year 2 or 3 on the aftermarket set

I just got one from Walmart . I would not suggest one of the expensive Ricks starters. I just took mine apart and it is just a stock starter with a fancy billet end cover with Ricks on it. The stock rebuild kit worked perfect in it. Now I have 2, a spare.

not for nothing but Yamaha has a factory in china. They produce bikes and parts. I would guess original starter is from there.

Definitely curious to hear how the Chinese Walmart starter works/holds up, please give us a status report on that item.
