  • Directional Signal Wiring

    Hi all.

Previous owner removed all handlebar controls to give the bike a "cleaner" look. I ordered generic L and R handlebar controls for convenience. All is wired back up except directional signal. Br/W is hot, Ch is Left and Gr is R. Somehow Yellow/Red energizes the flasher, but I have no way to add this to the aftermarket switch like the original had....

The wiring diagram shows the Y/R wire connected to the
original switch, but doesn't show where on a terminal

The L or R lights just stay high beam WITHOUT the Y/R wire involved, will blink if momentarily Y/R touched to + lead, but if Y/R is left on contact they will just stay on solid high beam. WTH???

Is there anyway to add the Y/R to the 3 terminal switch to get the flasher to start blinking?

    Thanks in advance

The Y/R wire is a wire that momentarily connects to ground when sliding the turn signal left or right, which tells the turn signal relay, "flasher", to activate. It is also part of the cancellation system.

I'm gonna try running a ground to the Y/R from the bulbs, see if that'll work.

The Y/R wire shouldn't be grounded all of the time, only when the right or left turn switch is engaged, "momentarily".

Thanks Duke. I grounded Y/R and everything is blinking just fine! All my switches are now connected!

What is the middle switch on the right bar?

Looks like a headlight/running light switch

That's what i thought. But even my '82 no longer had the option to turn the headlight off (was that a new law it had to be on?) so I was just curious. With the LED halos it would be nice to use those as running lights and turn on main headlight beams when desired.
