Wiring up a tachometer.

I got a tach for my 2005 Road Star 1700 and need to know how to wire it up. It has 2 wires 1 red 1black than it has 3 wires 1 is Black 1 is Green and 1 is yellow with a black strip.
Is there anyone that can help.

Are you a bike mechanic? You have all the right answers and info!! This post about the tach is good stuff. Do I need to calibrate after installing? Also does a mounting kit come with the gauge? Do I need an adapter kit or is that just for EFI? You input is appreciated

Yup is exactly as the video.

On the low signal side of the ignition coil, not the high (spark plug) side. Coils have a 12v feed and a signal from ignition module or TCI box.

Looks similar to my speedo on my XS. Red and black are for the light bulb face. The rest are for the tach. Here is a video but i have not confirmed if it works.

A 13,000 rpm scale would be almost useless on a motor that only revs a bit over 4,000. The needle would never get very far up the scale. I'd like to find one of those little tacos that only went to 6,000..

Agreed. It's probably better than nothing but when the engine rev range is from 1,000 - 4,000 you're only using approx 1/3 of the scale.

This is the gauge I'm using now. So far so good.
Faria 2" Tachometer Variable Frequency 4000 RPM Gauge - Black.
It works thru one of the wires from the alternator signal wires, then you adjust the frequency on the back of the tach.

I own a Koso TNT-02, even with the installation kit I'm not able to get the right signal on my meter.... Everything on it work except the RPM and the Fuel but I have HD Sportster tank without electronic into it so it's fine.
