  • Looking for a Long Life Battery Recommendation

After my most recent experience with a YUASA battery not even lasting a year, and them denying a warranty claim, I'm done with YUASA. Never again. So now i need a recommendation on a good battery that's going to last me *minimum* 3 years. And preferably a longer warranty than 12 months. ...My first R* battery lasted 5 years and the no name I got a O'Reilly Auto Parts lasted 3.. So let's hear it. What's your recommendation?

  • #2
YUASA #YTX20L-BS are one of your better batteries, but I guess there is a lemon in every bunch.

What Battery is the best, is like asking, what oil is the best?
I've just been buying the cheap batteries lately.

      That's what I had, the YUASA YUAM620BH YTX20HL-BS

I use no name brand on everything i own, as long as your charging system is good any battery should last 5 years at least

Guy at AAA told me the average life for a battery, ANY battery in the Phoenix area is 2.8 years. I guess the heat kills 'em 'cause he's been pretty accurate. With that said, I have had really good luck with my Motocross brand battery I got on Amazon. Lotsa cranking amps, and under $90 IIRC. Its an AGM style. Now you know I don't ride a lot, and I'm not real good about keeping it on the trickle charger either. This sucker holds a charge like nobody's business. I think it was even made in the U>S>A> but don't hold me to it.

I've thought about an AGM because it seems like they'd handle all the vibration better. What was the brand and model number?

The brand is MOTOCROSS. If you are familiar shopping Amazon, you know you can just search battery for a 200? Yamaha Road Star and I'll come back with every one they have that'll fit. I quit using acid batteries years ago. A good AGM costs the same or less now days and you don't have that stupid little drain tube spittin' acid all over your bike every time you hit a bump or it gets hot outside.

The Yuasa is an AGM battery. I don't know what happened to yours but all the ones I've had on my '99 have lasted 6 years or more. How long did you let it sit after filling with electrolyte before charging it?

Walmart. They are everywhere and they have a easy return policy. Bikes are a bitch on batteries.

Lance, maybe your battery failed because you tried to rebuild it!

I'm sure I did something wrong. Probably was user error.

I don't know Shores. I commented on you post in one of Doc's threads that I thought you were a sick bastard like me. I have to take that back. You have a sicker sense of humor than I do.

I typically go for the cheapest thing on eBay, and that's worked well for me... but, I'm in the NE, and I don't think our riding season or winters are too hard of them. They go for years....

I have 3 years on my battery that I bought from Napa. I don't recall the brand but it was around $100. I put one in my old Vstar and had good luck with it also.

I went this time to an Odyssey PC545mj :

                      https://www.batterymart.com/p-odysse...j-battery.html

They're around $128. but for me worth it as their life span can be tremendous. That one is a metal jacket which I believe can handle weather extremes better than most. I leave one with the ground disconnected in AZ all summer w/o any charger on it. I hook it up and it starts immediately. This works like a deep cycle even though the cca is only 150 cca.

I guess I'm sold on them as that type can last a long time. The 2 Optimas (old version--much better) deep cycle have been (with trickle chargers on) on my p.u. camper for about 25 years.

I fried my Yaesu by leaving the phone charger on it all winter. I usually buy the cheapest batteries and have good luck, i tried the Yaesu because of the positive comments. Will have to see how this one works out. I have Lithium batteries in my off road quad but mainly for space constraints. expensive, but they have kick.

If I'm not working full time, and I happen to stumble on to a wad of cash by then, I'll be there.

Thanks Brian, that's exactly what I was looking for. Would prefer a longer warranty, but I feel better about an AGM and at least the warranty starts from date of "delivery" not order.

New Yuasa Glass Mat 310cca. Most important to let the electrolyte sit twice as long as recommended before charging to ensure long battery life. Best to charge with a smart charger that knows it is the first charge or can be set for it.

my local dealer charges me 125 clams for same battery. 2 yr free replacement which is a testament to how
good these are... also, how much profit he makes on each one.

You've got to figure, if it's $88.95 delivered, it's probably <$75 wholesale, so at roughly $50 profit per, I'd say make sense to offer the 2 year warranty. They're not a national chain are they? I'd love to get me some of that 2 year replacement warranty.
