  • H3 35W bulbs for passing/aux lights

    I have had problems with Hella H3 35W bulbs that I have ordered from Amazon. The problem is the hot wire that is covered in blue insulator. The wire frays near the connection at the bulb. Then you bulb works sometime and other time does not. What is everybody else with the aux lights using for bulbs?
    Can I go with a higher watt bulb? these are the Yamaha factory lights.

    I have 55 watt halogens in mine and put yellow tinted film over the lens on both. I know some folks on here say that is too much load but I have had them on for over a year and never blown a fuse or had a wiring issue yet. My riding buddies say they can see me from way off with those bright yellow lights and they do not seem to blind oncoming drivers like the blue tinted HID/LED lights do.

      Where did you get the tint? I thought about putting yellow lights in the passing light buckets but tint should be pretty cheap. The yellow tint on stock bulbs in daytime should be more than adequate for on coming traffic to see me.

    Just something to think about,
    Running 35 watt bulbs x 2 = 5.4 amps, versus 55 watts bulbs x 2 = 8.5 amps. A difference of 3.1 amps.
    The "99" thru "03" RS has a max 21 amp charging system and I think the "04s" up have a max 30 amp charging system. I, myself try to keep from never putting the charging system over 80% of the maximum current load.
    I've been using 25 watt bulbs on my "00" and "01" and is plenty bright for me. The good LEDs is the way to go, I just haven't crossed over yet.

      I made the mistake of putting the 55w bulbs on my '05. I would not recommend it at all as my plugs in the headlight bell melted.

        Stock Yamaha 35w for me. Same issue installed 55w and blew fuse.

          Just to consider,

          When installing driving lights with the power coming off the stock head light, it will draw 9.3 amps.
          50/60 watt headlight stock + (2) 35 watt driving lights = 120 watts divided by 12.9 volts = 9.3 amps.

          With (2) 55 watt driving lights plus stock head light, it would be constantly drawing 12.4 amps, and is pushing the 15 amp fuse to the limits, along with the wiring and connections.

            After my fuse blew i purchased a kuryakyn running light harness that runs directly from the battery with its own switch. Happy times!!

              I went 55w to match my brighter headlight. Separate fused wire running up flipped by a relay.
              No issues with charging.

                I am ordering the Eastern Beaver handlebar switch and relay kit to address my overloaded passing lights wiring. Thanks for the tips guys. I'll report back on how the plugs look after I do the installation.
